IMO:
I would lean towards recent manufacture for the following reasons:
1. The seller makes absolutely no claims as to age or
authenticity.
2. The marks on the back are shallow and appear to be
made from purposeful, glancing blows. They also cover the entire back of the sign and do not appear to be random.
I was told years ago that there is a gentleman at the Harley museum who is an authority on Harley signs and other early Harley advertising memorabilia. I would do a little more research before throwing down that kind of cash on this piece. Good luck and please keep us posted. I am interested in what you discover. Dave

One should be politically correct and say stuff like...authentic recreation or genuine facsimile...or recent manufacture. It actually is what the seller states though...a porcelain sign. lol Caveat emptor. Dave

I'm not interested in purchasing the sign.
I doubted its veracity from the word go.
Just thought I'd get a few more options.

Did Harley ever make a sign similar to this sign or is it a complete fantasy piece? Dave

politically correct? Everyone that plays gets a trophy, regardless of win or lose, right? And you don't need to stand up when our flag is raised or our anthem played.

Fake is fake. No need to sugar coat it.

I do believe opinions should be stated as opinions and it's wrong to try to pass opinions as facts. Facts should have supporting evidence offered to back them up.

It is a fact that this is my opinion.

LOL...I was just going to post this and saw the thread. ITS FAKE...VC sold one about 6 months ago and I believe it was made in limited production. I think it was VC at least...AWESOME SIGN, but its 100% repro or fantasy. If you fall for this clowns patina...just look at his completed. He must have bought the hammers in bulk and have arms of steel. Personally I think these people are the lowest of the low...FIRST OFF, I am fine with repop stuff. In fact I would LOVE to own this sign in undamaged condition...The moment they take a hammer to it, they are committing what should be a crime. Trying to pass it off as old. Its laughable how stupid some of these millionaire car collectors out there are that are buying this *****, but sad as well that they are going to have such a sour taste in their mouth when they find out they got took. Unlikely that they will return for seconds for real stuff. Is there a huge cost associated with putting in banner blanket format on the rear of these signs the name of the company that made them...Like USPS does on the inside of their priority boxes? Would be a great way to stop this. Just plaster the rear with proper makers info...Not something that can be chipped away with one swing of the hammer. Would need to grinder the entire rear.

Dave, they did make one like this...it was just a big deal at Barrett Jackson...prolly why this guy dragged out the hammer and acid bath on this nice recreation...to catch some money hoarder slipping, and he is.

Maybe its not a rich guy. It could be a guy who worked his balls off to make a bit of extra scratch to get a few really "cool" things to invest in and is getting swindled.Ever think of that?

Jim makes a good point. When I was getting started a couple of years ago I had no idea there were so many fake signs.
I can't say how glad I am that I gravitated towards large neons. The number of fraudulent porcelain signs is skyrocketing.
Shows on tv make it look easy to buy cheap and sell high.
I rarely ever sell my stuff but I bought 2 signs a couple years ago then got buyers remorse.
Wanted to sell but convinced myself I'd been duped into buying a couple of fakes.
Sat on the signs for 10 months doing research and got some help from a couple old gassers before I was sure were real.
Didn't want to pass along a fake sign regardless of loss.
Most ebay sellers would have never looked back. There are some rotten people out there.

I wouldn't mind purchasing one of those "fakes" for a couple hundred bucks to hang outside. Someone went to a lot of trouble making a die cut sign porcelain sign that large. Do most believe that it is domestic or another import ? Dave
