Company Of The Month for June 2004 is Sinclair.

When I first started collecting petroliana in 1995 my main focus was Standard Oil Company (Ind). My boys were excited about the hobby too. Darrel, my younger son collected Shell. He had an impressive collection going until he lost interest in his teen years. Jeff, my older son collected Sinclair. I'd have to say Jeff was more serious about collecting than Darrel was. As most of you know, Jeff passed away after a swimming accident just after his 15th birthday in June of 1997. My main focus is collecting globes, but I add items to Jeff's collection when I can.

I'm dedicating this month's feature on Sinclair to my son,
Jeff Drake, 6-6-82 to 6-27-97.

During the month I'll post some history of Sinclair and post pictures of what Jeff collected and what I've added to it.

If you have any pictures you'd like to add please do so on the 27th, 28th, or 29th.

I'll wrap things up with a few special items on the 30th.

Harry Ford Sinclair got started in the oil business as a speculator buying and selling oil leases. It wasn't long before he had attracted a group of investors. Sinclair was always the man in control. They built up quite a bit of working capital, and borrowed even more money so they could buy crude oil from the producers before the pipelines reached the oil fields. They made a tremendous amount of money. Harry wasn't satisfied. In 1916 Sinclair and his investors started Sinclair Oil and Refining Company. Sinclair had done his homework. He started off with crude production, storage, pipeline, refining, and marketing. Within a month Sinclair was amoung the ten biggest oil companies! Before the year was out Sinclair was marketing from Denver to New York. They eventually marketed from coast to coast.

Sinclair was an innovator. He had a private telegraph system installed along the pipeline from the wells to the refineries. It also extended to sales offices and to his main office in New York.

A coal haulers strike had stut down the Chicago public schools. Sinclair ordered his employees to convert all the school boilers from coal burners to oil burners. He created alot of good will and opened up a new market for fuel oil at the same time.

Sinclair was expanding rapidly. He bought up pipelines, refineries, and even some filling stations. By 1920 the company had quadrupled in size. Much of the expansion was done using borrowed money. Debt was a problem that plagued Sinclair for many years.

Bob, great photos and info. I was raised in Wyo. and there is a town there named "Sinclair" my uncle used to live there, and worked for the refinery. I decided to see if the towns name was derived from the Oil Co. While doing so, I found this website that has some great Sinclair history and photographs. Photos of oil oil tanker trucks, gas stations, pumps, and tons of info. Too much to read at one sitting. Did you know that Sinclair developed the first "tamper-proof" can? With your permission, I'd like to share the link to this history.
http://www.sinclairoil.com/history/history_intro.htm

Oh, I did learn that the town of Sinclair was a company name. Previously called Parco, Wy. but changed in the 1940's to reflect the importance of Sinclair Oil to this small town.

In the early days there were no standards for auto maintenace. In 1920 that changed when Sinclair published the first Law Of Lubrication booklet. This publication specified lubricants for each make of car, truck, and tractor.

In the earky 20's Sinclair opened its first service station. They had previously just had filling stations. This allowed them to enter the T.B.A. (tires, batteries, and accessories) market.

Its a long an involved story, but Harry Sinclair was implicated in the Teapot Dome Scandal. He was aquitted, but was sentanced with contempt of court for hiring private detectives to spy on the jurors. Sinclair's troubles weren't over. He served six months in prison for contempt of the senate for refusing to answer questions during senate hearings.

By the early 1930's Sinclair had bought or merged with:
Cudahy
Union Petroleum (not Union Oil)
Puritain Oil
Parco
Rio Grande
Keith
Prairie Pipeline
the eastern marketing of Richfield.
There were other aquisitions as well.

Harry Sinclair was also involved with the re-organization of the western Richfield operation.

Sinclair had extensive holdings in Europe and Mexico as well. The European operation was sold off prior to WWII.

The war years were good to Sinclair. The war effort required new lubricants and aviation gas which Sinclair (and others) provided at a nice profit.

Sinclair's expansion continued throughout the 30's and early 40's. By the late 40's stations were closing in rural areas and more stations were being built in stronger markets in the cities.

Harry Sinclair stepped down at the end of 1948. He had done a great job of growing his company, but left two major problems for his successors. Debt had been a problem from the early days, and was still a problem in 1948. The other problem was more important. Sinclair hadn't kept up with the production end of the business. By the mid 50's they were buying as much as 60% of their crude oil from other producers.

thanks for an excellent job. your story i can relate to for two reasons. first, i only collect sinclair because i worked at a sinclair station on long island for several years from 1968-1972. and second( and most important)i also had a son die in june of 1997( drowing )and i can relate to your feelings. i think its great that you continue to add to jeffs collection, for you and him. i do not write in very often, but i just wanted you to know your not alone. be well...

Sinclair continued to buy up smaller companies during the 40's, 50's and 60's. They include part of the Larco (Little America Refining Company), Simpson, Stoll, Okaw Valley Oil. By 1964 the Richfield east operation that Sinclair had bought in the 30's had been rebranded to Sinclair.

In 1966 Atlantic merged with Richfield (Ca) to form ARCO. Arco and Sinclair merged in 1969 and many Sinclair stations were rebranded Arco. This is where the company history gets hard to trace. I found conflicting stories while doing my research but as best as I can tell the government made Arco sell off part of the Sinclair operation. In 1976 Larco (which Sinclair had owned part of) bought what was left of Sinclair. Today they operate over 2600 stations in the west and mid-west.

That does it for the history part of this feature unless someone has verifiable info on Sinclair's more recent history. If you have more info please email me at Lastgas15@aol.com

From here on out I'll just be posting pictures (about 140-150 more) and dates that those items were from.
I hope you've enjoyed COTM so far.
Bob

Thanks Scott. The Extra Duty bank isn't to hard to find. The H-C pump bank is very common. and the Power X bank is tougher to find. The H-C banks out number the Power X banks 40 or 50 to one.

Here's a very unusual Sinclair logo. Sinclair experimented with different logos throughout the 1950's.

WOW! Great collection!! I would like to see more Sinclair stuff from the early 60's or the "Dino" era. The books that are out there show a ton of pre-1960 collectibles not much after that. As a younger collector, this is the stuff I have vague memories of.

Power X over 100 octane globe. 1957-61.

This was the last Power X globe used. Its known as Dino Power X because of the Dino logo that was introduced in 1959.
This globe was used from 1959-61 when Dino Supreme replaced Power X as the premium grade of gasoline.

After I had worked all those days, I needed to catch up on some Oldgas postings. At that time, COTM had like 80 posts and I thought "no way am I gonna sit here and wait for all this stuff to download". What a mistake that would have been!!!! I looked at everything this morning and what a FANTASTIC presentation Lastgas has given us. I have enjoyed looking at everything tremendously. This even compelled me to post a pic of some early signs I have. The far left sign is an extremely rare sized version. I think it is 18" vs. more common 16" (or somethiong like that). Anyway, thanks Bob for all the valuable info.

Bob, by far the most rare and expensive item in your collection must be that receipt booklet from Humbolt, Tn. It is one of only five known to exist! (inside joke). Also have you no KITES? (another joke). Actually, I wanted to make this the 100th posting. LOL

Bob, great job!!!!!! I know it's time consuming & alot of work to do this stuff & I wanted to let you know it's very much appreciated!! I was thinking along the same lines as Gary, this is going to take a long time to download; really glad I took the time to look at everything. GREAT collection!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks guys! I made the pictures 20% smaller so they'd load faster. I'm not putting too many up at once so they'll load faster for the guys that check in often.
I've got another 50 pictures to post, and Doc is going to help me out by posting another 50 or so pictures of stuff that isn't mine on the 27th, 28th and 29th. I'll wrap up on the 30th with a few items and maybe a story.
Bob
P.S. A friend of mine sent me that reciept book. I wonder if he was trying to bribe me so I would quit twisting his arm to do another COTM feature. No kites....yet. LOL(inside joke).

Although this globe is very common and not graphic, you'll find it in many globe collections. Many of us remember seeing Dino globes in use from 1959-70.

Dino Supreme came along in 1961 replacing Power X as the premium grade of gasoline at Sinclair stations.

Jeff had put together an impressive collection in the few years he was collecting. We've managed to add a fair number of items in the 7 years he's been gone. I'm going to post pictures of two more items when I close out the feature on the 30th.

There are several items that have eluded us so far. Sinclair used many different cardboard signs and paper posters. We only have a few of what was used.

I have a thing for gas station blueprints too, but I don't have any prints of Sinclair stations.

There are several cans that we are missing. The Dino Track and Road composite with green and white checkered upper and red lower area is at the top of the list, as are striped cans from the 20's.

We're missing several other quarts, handy oilers, and grease cans, ad glass, globes, signs, car care products, etc.

I'm looking for the ultimate gas and oil collectible.....a porcelain gas station. A two or three bay Sinclair station preferably.

If you have any Sinclair items that I haven't shown so far please post pictures of them in the next few days. I'd appreciate an email if you have any Sinclair items for sale. You can reach me at Lastgas15@aol.com

I relied heavily on a few collector books while I researched this feature. Gas Globes, by Benjamin and Henderson; Collecting Oil Cans, and More Oil Cans For The Collector, both by Miller and Sonewald; Sinclair Collectibles, by Henderson and Benjamin. Much of the information came from the items in the collection itself, maps, lube guides, catalogs, etc.

Thanks to all those that have emailed compliments on this feature and condolences for the loss of my son. I also want to thank Karen for putting up with my collecting obsession.

Feel free to start posting your Sinclair items. Common or rare, we want to see them all!

I finally took the time to look at all the pics, very very impressive grouping, I wish I had something Sinclair to contribute. Bob, you are to be congratulated on your efforts keeping these features going. Its easy to conceive these things but making it happen and keeping the steam takes the work, and you've done a great job, and selected the right people to back you up, a big thanks to all those involved in these features, Well Done!

Thank You Bob for posting this pic. Got this on the way home from Iowa gas about 5 years ago. Crusty ol guy (cann't say old anymore becasuse I'm 60), had service plaques on his wall 5 years thru 35 years service!! Only thing he would sell after how many phone calls. Little ol town about 3 streets and look like the station did back in the 50's. Its not a pam clock. thanks again Paul

Thanks for the kind words Doc.
The items that Doc has posted or will be posting are not in our collection.

Many of the globes he just posted were in our very first Globe Of The Month feature back in January of 2003.

Feel free to post your Sinclair items.

None of this stuff Doc is posting is ours. These pictures came from shows, this site and others, or have been emailed to me. I guess you could say the pictures Doc is posting are a big part of my wish list.

Back in 1996 or early '97 I had bought a few items from a dealer in Texas. I got a call from him one night. He had a chance to buy a Sinclair Mobiline 5 gallon easy pour can. This was back before all the books had been written about petroliana. It was before ebay was going strong too. We had never heard of Sinclair Mobiline. The dealer described the can and shot me a price. I agreed to buy it for Jeff. I just had to wait for a shipping quote from the dealer. Days turned into weeks and the dealer didn't call back. After several attempts I finally talked to him. He said he decided not to sell the can. Jeff was pretty bummed out about it.
After Jeff finished his freshman year he started working with me. While we sat in the truck and ate lunch on his first day on the job I asked if he was going to buy a globe with the money he was going to earn that summer. "Nope. I'm going to buy a Sinclair Mobiline 5 gallon easy pour can" he replied matter of factly. Keep in mind we had never seen one. I thought wow, that's gonna be tough. A few days later Jeff was in the hospital fighting for his life after a swimming accident. He fought a good fight but finally passed away after five days.
Through the struggles of dealing with his passing, I never forgot about that can.
Nearly a year later I found myself driving to an auction several hours away. There were four globes there. During the long drive I found myself thinking about things. Jeff of course. But I was also thinking about how I never traveled that far for an auction. I never took off work to attend an auction. I thought about going back home. I knew I'd be late for Darrel's baseball game that night. I pushed on towards the auction even though I had second thoughts about it. When I arrived at the auction I immediately got my bid card. I had called the auctioneer about the globes before I made the trip. The clerk was expecting me and told me the auctioneer had given me wrong info about one of the globes. I headed out to see the globes. I was really disgusted when I saw them. The auctioneer had messed up the descriptions of all four globes! What's worse is I already had those globes. I was standing there thinking how I just drove many hours for nothing. I took off a day of work for nothing. I wasn't a happy camper! I was ready to head for home. Then I turned and looked outside. There it was! A hundred or more feet away sat a Sinclair Mobiline 5 gallon easy pour can on a hay rack. I wasn't going anywhere until I bought that can! The auctioneer jumped all over the place. He'd sell right up to that rack then go somewhere else to sell. It was a huge auction with two rings most of the day. After 6 1/2 hours they finally got to the can. You see, the next day would have been Jeff's 16th birthday. In less than a minute the can was in my hands, and I was looking at the sky telling Jeff happy birthday.
Since that time I've seen several cans like it in much better condition. Some day I might even buy a better one. One thing's for sure. I'll never get rid of that can!

My good friend Steve Proffitt wrote about Jeff and this can in Antique Week in October of 1998.

Three or four years ago I bought this H-C Pam clock. It was in pretty tough shape. The green had all flaked off. I always had an idea of what I wanted the marquis at the top to say. When I decided to do this COTM feature in Jeff's memory I knew it was time to take action. I contacted friend and fellow oldgaser Terry Hubert. You all know him as Big Cheese. Cheese said they could do what I had in mind and to ship it to him. I know Terry and Dawn are very busy, and I was worried that I wouldn't have the clock back in time for this feature. My worries were unfounded. The clock was done in the time frame that Terry had told me. Dawn did a wonderful job on the restoration and on the marquis.
The clock, and the rest of Jeff's collection reside in my office as a daily reminder of what a great kid he was and of the great times we shared as not only as father and son, but as friends.

Putting this feature together brought back alot of memories. Things like our first trip to Iowa Gas in '95. That's where we met noted Sinclair collector Jackie Knott. Jackie showed us pictures of his collection and offered words of encouragement to Jeff. Other fond memories were of the countless auctions and automotive swap meets we used to attend. Jeff would always scout things out and report back to me. I can visualize the excitment in his voice and eyes as he would say "Pops, you gotta see the cool can I saw over there".
That does it for this COTM. I hope you enjoyed seeing Jeff's collection.

Jeff, this COTM is for you.
Pops
