As some of you may know, I have been collecting Sign Pole thermometers for many years. I have been asked to do a Collectible of the Month feature on them. First of all, what is a Sign Pole thermometer? They are plastic thermometers about 7" tall shaped like the signs that used to be in front of service stations. In fact on many of the original cradboard sleeves that they came in they were refered to as "service thermometers". These were given away as dealer promotions starting in the late 1950's through the mid 1970's. The earliest date I have seen on one was 1959 with 1976 being the latest. There are 7 basic styles of these thermometers. I will show photos of each in the next post. The first six styles could also be ordered with a small calendar attached at the bottom. Bill Fortune

Scalloped bottom version - oval top, round top and rectangular top Angled base version - oval top, round top and shield top This last version is slightly shorter than the others and is made of of a thicker plastic. To the best of my knowledge they were exclusively used in Canada. As the month progresses I will be going alphabetically through the known examples, listing some sales info and company brochures featuring the thermometers, provide a list of those that are waiting to be found and wrap up with some interesting non gas examples as these were used for all types of advertising. They are an interesting collectible because examples can be found for most of the companies we collect, they don't take up a lot of room, and they are usually fairly inexpensive. Note I said "usually". As we go through the known examples feel free to post when that letter is being listed or email photo to me for posting if you miss out on a letter or don't wish to post youself. I will began with examples starting with "A" tomorrow. [This message has been edited by wfort39663 (edited 11-13-2007).]

Starting out with the "A"s. Agway is a farm Coop still in business in the New York/Pennsylvania region. I also know of a version of the red/black Amoco with the words "American" above and "Gas" below the word "Amoco". An example with a calendar attached. Unfortunately the flame holder has been broken on this example. I also know of a rectangular newer logo Ashland. Atlantic logos progressing through their merger with Richfield to form ARCO. I got this box containing two sample thermometers at a show about 9 years ago. The paper insert shows examples of "Flame Top" thermometers available. I have seen examples of all except the Pan Am but have feel it's out there as it is shown. Pricing info inside box top. Looks like 144 was the minimum order and a calendar on the bottom cost an extra 4 cents. Some added ordering info. [This message has been edited by wfort39663 (edited 11-15-2007).]

The "B"s I purchased the Bay Thermometer from the grandson of the original station owner. He included these photos of his grandfather at the station circa 1960. Bear Wheel Alinement. Note two different spellings on the Black/White version. "Alinement" and "alignment" [This message has been edited by wfort39663 (edited 11-15-2007).]

Some thermometers from Champlin. And Chevron. You see the newer logo on the right quite often. I have never seen one that had any writing on the bottom. The older logo is much harder to find. [This message has been edited by wfort39663 (edited 11-15-2007).]

Bill,
Looks great so far! I had no idea there were so many of these.
The D-X logo change was in 1957, so maybe that could be your oldest one?

Wes, Thanks for the input on the DX date. Several companies had thermometers with logos that can date a transition period of signage. The 1959 date I earlier noted was actually on the thermometer. Amoco, Gulf, Lion, Mobil, Phillips, Sinclair, Sohio and Texaco are among the users of transitional logos.

Some thermometers begining with "F". I have seen two Fina thermometers and they both came from the same town which is about 30 miles north of where I live. Both were found more than 300 miles from that town! They sure travel arround. The two Flying A may look the same but if you look close one says "Service" and the other says "Gasoline". The service version is more common. [This message has been edited by wfort39663 (edited 11-19-2007).]

Some Phillips 66 thermometers. The top hanger is missing on the Platolene 500, but it is hard to find in any condition and will definitely do until and if I ever find another. The Premier is out of Texas. Pure thermometers. I have also seen the version on the right on an oval top thermometer. [This message has been edited by wfort39663 (edited 11-24-2007).]

Paddy......Bill, thanks for the Billups license plate topper that you brought to me at Iowa.................I don't know if I ever thanked you.
Paddy Wanted. Billups, Ride with Rose, Har-V, LORECO, STANOCOLA, Pan Am (early), Hurricane, Evangeline, Canal, Gulf Coast, oil companies.

Union 76 and Utoco. You see quite a few of the Union with just the 76 on top and no writing on the bottom. The ones with "Union 76" on top and writing on the bottom are much harder to find.

Some of the flat style that seem to have been exclusive to Canada. I have also seen a Shell with the top in the shape of the Shell sign. [This message has been edited by wfort39663 (edited 12-05-2007).]

At many shows I have been asked what can you do for a thermometer that has a broken tube? The two types of thermometers pictured here provide exact replacements for broken tubes. The fish bone thermometer on the left is the easiest to work with. Place a flat blade under the black fish bone skeleton and you can pop it from the white background. The tube and gold paper backing is not even glued in place a will fall right into your hand. With the key thermometer on the right you will need a sharp blade like an exacto knife as you can get under the paper and remove the tube and backing with little effort. Remove the damaged tube and backing from the thermometer you wish to repair, use a little plastic cement to glue the replacement tube in and you are in business. These two types of thermometers can be found for less than $5 with a little looking. Flea markets are excellent places to look. [This message has been edited by wfort39663 (edited 12-07-2007).]

Four days left on this months collectible. If you've got anything to add please post it! The topic is sign pole thermometers and they come with many different types of advertising even though gas/oil was the most common use. I will be posting some of the more interesting ones with other types of advertising and will end up this topic with a listing of known oil/gas thermometers for which I do not have good photos.
