Don't remember the first one, but about 15 years ago I bought a SkyTrak from a great guy, Dave, in NJ. Never really liked globes because of breakage paranoia, but I liked it because it was from a local Wayne NJ company that had a few local stations and provided fuel for the local airfields.
Lonnie, please add "the rest of the story" about this find of SkyTraks.

Thanks MetroPetro for reminding me of the "Skytrak" event. Dave (I can't remember his last name) kept one of the Skytrack globes with the plane and I assume that is the one you got from him.

As Paul Harvey says "and now the rest of the story." It will be 18 years ago this February that I got a call from a guy in New Jersey with some globes for sale. I had been running an ad in CTO! Magazine looking for Dixie globes and he called in response to that ad. The only thing was that I was one of those collectors that never sold anything and was only looking for globes for my collection. The thought of buying a whole load of globes was a little overwhelming. He had at least 25 complete globes, with many of them being duplicates. He had a few Flying A, a few different Crown Oil & Gas and several Skytrak globes with the little airplane on it as well as dozens of miscellaneous lenses and 50 sets of Skytrak lenses with just the word and no plane. He wanted $3000 for the whole group (remember this was 18 years ago) but they had to be picked up in New Jersey. My head was spinning just a little, I had never intended to be a globe dealer but as I looked at the numbers I said to myself "Hey, if I sell off most of the stuff I can add several globes to my collection for free for the effort."

I committed to buying the group and a few weeks later (after borrowing the money and assuring my wife I knew what I was doing!)I started out early in the morning for the 710 mile drive to the guys place. When I got there he showed me the globes, they were in the back of his paint shop and they were packed in newspaper from 1964. They had 26 years worth of dust but it was the most exciting thing that had ever happened to me in the globe hobby. Dave had got them out of a local bulk plant a number of years before and was always going to do something with globes but had just never got around to it. One day he decided he could make beter use of the space for something else and made the decision to sell. Dave was a super nice guy and we chatted awhile, then I paid him and loaded the stuff up for the long drive home.

It took a couple of years to sell off the duplicate items but one thing I learned is that it is fun to set up and sell at shows! The only globe I have left today from the group is one of the Skytrak globes with the plane and I will probably always keep it just for the memory.

Here is the lesson I learned back then that I am going to share with some of the newer collectors. As you gain knowledge don't be afraid to buy duplicate things or items that are reasonably priced. It costs very little to set up at a gas show and it is a great way to finance your collection/addiction! Selling is also a great way to meet other collectors and to build the network of people out there that will call you when they have something for sale.

As I have said in the past, the vast majority of collectors are super nice people and there is a huge group of new friends out there in this hobby that are just waiting to be met. Hope everyone is having a great day!

Thanks!

Lonnie

Thanks Lonnie & Aaron for hosting the OTM, this is and will be a fun one.
Great stories and pictures so far, keep on posting!

Here is my first globe. A customer/friend gave it to me nos along with my first pump, the short 39 it's on which I had "spiffed up" to go with. Only have one other original globe, an American from the same guy, plus a few lenses and a repop Harley. Globes scare me actually as I watch the guys I went to college with in my petro area with pool sticks and beer bottles and flying cue balls and the Wii...

- is the freaking lens in there crooked?? Blast never noticed that before.

This isn't my first globe , it's my second and oldest. my first was a capco dino. I bought this globe around 1990. the guy had it in the bed of his truck at a swap meet. I asked how much and could I get a better look at it and he dropped it on the pavement. the thing exploded and the lenses rolled around like when you would spin a coin and laid down undamaged. I stood there in shock. Needless to say he was pi;;ed off and I bought it for pennies on the dollar by todays prices. By the way I'm 52 yrs. old;;;;;;;18 on viagra'''''''''Ron

Here is a picture of my first globe. I bought an entire building of pumps and parts from an old oil jobber. The building was in bad shape, the roof had several leaks and kids had broken in over the years and broken several old globes. This old VS globe was the only one I found, it was still in its original, half moth eaten box from 1949.

I bought this globe from a store called "The Gas Pump" in Riverside, CA about 1985. In spite of working for Union Oil, I had always liked the Shell logo. My wife's grandfather had been an oilman, so buying this was not a problem. I didn't get my second globe for about 15 years. My 50th was just delivered last week. My kids think I'm crazy, but my wife still likes them ---- she just wants them displayed a little better than they are now.

The story of my first globe starts with my first sign discovery. I have been collecting for about 6 months now, and am concentrating on Mobil items. My brother works as a delivery man for a local oil distributer. I had asked him to "keep an eye out" for old gas signs and collectibles, since he has the opportunity to visit lots of old farms delivering fuel. He called me a couple weeks later and explained he had found an old Red Crown thermometer in this guys barn, and he was interested in selling it. I wasn't too thrilled at first, thinking this was some little dinky 10" give-away thermometer. He said, NO, this is porcelain and it's about 6 feet tall! He wants $300 for it and that's the least he'll take. You bet I was in the car that evening and it was in my house that night! I was new to this but not dumb! I couldn't believe the sign after it was cleaned up. It still works fine, and has day one gloss and shine after my soft scrub bath. My brother was telling his Boss about the find when his Dad who used to own the company said, I've got an old Red Crown globe out in my barn, he's welcomed to have it if he wants it! SO, my long story long, I had an instant Red Crown collection within 3 days! I have since added a Mobilgas and a Metro globe to my collection. Not much, but I'm just starting. You would think the days of finding this stuff cheap or for FREE are gone, but it's still out there folks. Happy hunting.

Hi Guys;
Great stories! I like to hear the stories behind the globes as much as I like the globes themselves. The Super Bowl is done now lets see some more photos of you first globe. There are hundreds of Oldgas members who have at least one globe, take a few minutes and share your globe and story with the rest of the Oldgas community. Thanks!

Lonnie

If you've ever seen Randy Souders artwork, you'll notice this globe in several of his paintings. I purchased it from him a few years back and it was my first "real" globe.
