The person on ebay is Dave Green. Any of you out there that know him can atest he is as straight as the day is long. Dave is NOT a globe collector but is one of the best at hunting down stuff in the wild.
Russ, the globe definatly did not come from anywhere around Michigan or from any of Glen's old stuff that may have migrated there. The reason Dave don't want to tell exactly is the reason alot of us don't tell---- There may be more where it came from and he don't want any overaggresive pickers messing up his deal. I understand and respect that. Thats all I am saying and if Dave wants to sign up and speak he can. I believe he is a "lurker". Like I said, honest and forthcoming guy, just not going to give up the farm. I don't see how 100% money back guarentee can be confused. Just to let you guys know, I am right now the back-up bidder and plan to go much higher. I don't know how much my wallet will let me go, so does anyone want one of the big tractor signs I bought last weekend? I will not try and sell here but will post in "For Sale" section.

Hi Guys;
In 24 years of collecting I have only seen one Ford 1-piece globe like the one in question. That was many, many, years ago. I will have Aaron post a photo of it in Globe of the Month. As you will see from the photo the body style of the known original is different from the one listed on Ebay. Read these next words carfully - This does NOT mean that the one Ebay is a fake! However, it does mean that anyone thinking about buying it should move cautiously. I would not buy any valuable 1-piece without first inspecting it in person.

There have been many 1-piece globes reproduced in the last 10-14 years and there have been some that have turned up recently in Southeastern Michigan that are somewhat suspicious. There are always exceptions, but some things to look for when evaluating a 1-piece globe are - body style, letter style, type of paint and paint style on baked globes, type and depth of etching on 1-piece globes, as well as any other things that may not add up with a particular globe.

There are a few simple rules to follow when buying valuable 1-piece globes. Rule #1 Know who you are dealing with, buy from reputable people. Rule #2 Get a money back guarantee. Rule #3 Inspect the globe in person if at all posssible. Rule #4 Take it to the next show and get an honest opinion on the authenticity of the globe from several knowledgable long time collectors.

It seems that the vendor of this globe is willing to allow the potential buyer to follow these rules.

There are some good honest people out there that have sold (or have for sale) questionable 1-piece globes without knowing it, so don't be to quick to condem anyone even if a globe is a repo. It is impossible to tell for sure if a 1-piece globe is an original for sure with just a photo. These ramblings are just my 2 cents and you can take them for what they are worth!

Lonnie

Well I certainly believe what you say Lonnie about honest people who sell stuff that they aren't aware that what they are selling is either original or reproduction.. I recently bought a sign that looked every bit original on the internet, but when I got it and unpacked it, there was no question it was a reproduction sign. I contacted the sellers and they gladly refunded my money minus the shipping both ways which I was quite happy to do.. They just didn't know about what they were selling, maybe they got taken I don't know,it was all very innocent on their part,,," Honest people make mistakes". But the fellow selling the Ford globe offers a money back guarantee,no problem..

Lonnie, I know Rick Bonenberger has the upside down version of this same globe.(canopy style). Do you or Aaron have a photo of it to post so we could compare it to? Also, I believe the original you are talking about went through Collectors Auction Service around 98 or 99 right?

Here is a photo of the original Ford Service globe that was in Iowa in '97. This is the same globe that did get run through Collectors Auction shortly there after. As you can see this example from Iowa Gas is a little shorter (especially in the neck of the base) and wider than that of the one that's on ebay right now. The second photo is one of the seller's for easier comparison of the two globes.

Had it not been for the discusion here and Lonnies pic of a known original to compare it to i dont think it would have brought half as much. I myself at first guessed it was a fake, This site worked very well for both seller and buyers. Congrads!
