Just won this on ebay and was wondering what its worth? This is an original right? Asked the man selling it if its porcelain and its age and he told me it is porecelain and is from the 50's most likely. Just wanted to check with you oldgassers whether its truely original or not. Heres the link to it- http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ih=019&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWN%3AIT&viewitem=&item=290067666155&rd=1,1

Robert...that is a painted metal sign and not porcelain. The originality is iffy. When buying the Ford ovals, alway look for the 'PROPERTY OF FORD MOTOR CO' at the top of the sign.

Seth, step-dad talked to him on the phone and it is in fact porcelain. He talked to my step-dad and with painted metal when u put ur hands on the sign and move them over the letters it only rises slightly. His rises dramaticaly like a porcelain sign would. He explained that his close friend before he passed away bought an old dealership which had a bunch of old parts, 2 ford signs, and 1 41 mercury sign. So he's led me to believe that it is originial but then thats why i asked you all. Thanks for your input Seth and gasoildude. Is there any question I could ask him that he could answer that would confirm whether its poreclain or not for sure?

Robert

There is NO WAY that sign is porcelain. He can give you any story he wants, and it might be true on where he got it. But there's no doubt, no question, no hesitation THAT SIGN IS NOT PORCELAIN......FYI...Telling some guy who knows nothing about signs to run his hand over the letters is no way to determine if the sign is porcelain.

my step-dad told me to say this. The sign that i purchased has metal gromets in the holes and that he has never seen a painted metal sign in his life with metal gromets in the holes making him believe its porcelain. I told him that you all know what your talking about and are pretty much experts at this type of thing but he still thinks its porcelain. Do the painted metal repos have metal gromets in the holes? Could the seller of put them in?

I'm NOT saying it's a repo. They did make this sign as an original in both painted metal and porcelain.

It may very well be original, I just know it's not porcelain. If it's original I would say you got a great deal, as to what a repo is worth I couldn't answer that one (sorry).

Best of luck on it!

Robert, Try running a very sharp razor blade across the sign
in a damaged or edge area so you don't hurt it.
It will glide on porcelain and stick on paint. That should prove to you what you have.

It may very well be real, probably is, but is definitely not porcelain. People mistake porcelain for tin all the time...people think, "Well...it's probably enamel paint...porcelain enamel....2+2=5".

The seller is 30 minutes north of me.

I have two of similar signs at my house, but smaller in size. Both are 16.5"w x 11"h. One is single sided and the other is double sided.

Both look to be porceline, but are in fact painted metal. I bought both for $100 (with the flange) at the last Good Guys in Pleasanton. I didn't think that it was a bad deal.

I wouldn't pay no more than $150 for your sign.

Ilya

But thanks for all the help everyone.

Hi Robert- I watch many items on ebay besides selling- there are not many real bargains that go overlooked especially in signs- if that Ford sign was indeed a 1500 to 2000.00 sign you would have seen many dealers all over it- if you watch who else is bidding - which is getting more difficult to do with ebay changes-you will get some idea as to who thinks its a good deal- there is also a wealth of knowledge here on oldgas to draw upon- as you found after the fact-
It is a little iffy to bring up what you think is a bargain for all to see- but its all part of the learning process-
Most of the real bargains are not on ebay and very few at shows- they are right in our own back yard- thanks Don

Robert, just my 2 cents but I think I've seen a Ford porcelain sign but it was marked Veribrite at the bottom. I could be wrong. Here's a Ford porcelain sign just listed on ebay made by Walker, just like the Chevrolet signs. Ebay auction 190070577208.

Looks can be deceiving. At first, I thought that it was porceline when I bought it. However, upon a closer inspection at home, I saw that it was painted. It does look like a porceline sign, though.
