I have never seen a Shell globe up close, but something doesnt look right here. To me, it looks like the lettering was masked off and repainted and the paint pooled up on the bottom of the letters. The lettering also appears to go "outside of the lines" in places. Was this repainted, or do the originals look like this?190197592557

The globe in question-may or not have been repainted but in my opinion would not take away from the value of it.I have seen some that looked similiar. The condition appears to be excellent and that is what counts.

I'M NOT A GLOBE COLLECTOR REALLY, BUT I'D TURN THAT ONE DOWN SIMPLY BECAUSE OF THE "FAT" LETTERS THAT ALMOST TOUCH EACH OTHER MAKING IT LOOK LIKE A RETOUCH JOB. WOULD RATHER HAVE ONE WITH LETTERS ON A BETTER DIET! ~DOC

I have an original Shell globe the same as this one and red goes outside the recessed lettering in places on it also. It has not been repainted and in fact these Shell globes have some sort of baked on paint or such for the red lettering. Not your typical paint and can not be easily removed. This one in question my or may not have been repainted but you could tell for sure if the globe was seen in person.
Drive with Care and Buy Sinclair!! I buy Sinclair globes, signs, cans, ect.

Thanks Guys, I guess that one is the real deal, but it still looks like the paint is outside the lines compared to Franks.

The way you can tell if it's a re-paint , is use some paint thinners on the letters with a Q tip and if it comes off easily it's a re- paint as the original letters are baked/etched on and will not come off with paint thinners, in fact the only way to get the original paint off the letters is with paint stripper and a lot of hard scraping with a razor blade and fine emory cloth,,, I've done one before,,,

WES, PAINT THINNERS ARE JUST THAT..FOR THINNING PAINT. IT IS NOT STRONG ENOUGH TO REMOVE DRIED PAINT. NOW LACQUER THINNER IS ANOTHER STORY..... ~DOC

I SHOULD SPECIFY THAT PAINT THINNER WILL NOT REMOVE DRIED OIL BASED PAINTS. IT MIGHT IF IT WERE DRIED ACRYLIC PAINTS. LACQUER THINNERS WILL NOT EVEN TAKE OFF MOST BAKED ON PAINTS SUCH AS ON AN OLD SODA BOTTLE!

Sorry Doc,,, I meant Lacquer thinners,,, no it won't take off factory baked on paint but it will take off paint on a Shell globe that somebody has re-painted..Try it,,, if it comes off, it's a re-paint.. and to me a re-paint is just another globe re-painted,, not worth too much $$$$ maybe $200-$300 tops ! ( just another opinion ) it's not worth much either , ha,ha ha,
