Thanks Wfort, Im still having a hard time finding globes in those books.
Question for all...Can I trust the photos in the book? The colors of the globe on ebay and the globe in the book appear to be several shades off. (Red in the book is lighter, blue is darker than the pic on ebay). Otherwise the globe looks like an original. Should alarm bells be going off?
Thanks
John

Because of variances in (possibly cheapo) digital cameras on ebay photos, the camera used to shoot the book photo, the printing process of the book, and your monitor... No.

I would'nt really trust a color comparison between the book photo and a picture on the screen at all.

Just my opinion,
Wes

Ok Thermactor. Im new at this and am appalled by all the unmarked repos and downright fraudulent stuff on ebay, so maybe im paranoid. But i see comments by members that notice the smallest things showing something isnt an original, so was wondering if I could judge by color.
Thanks for the tip
John

Seller says that the lense's seem to have styrofoam backing inside? What's up with that?

Better to ask, than PAY good money for a repo.
I would rather do a retraction on ebay, than to over pay for an item.

The styrofoam comment would definitely concern me. I hadn't read that part...

Worth asking about, for sure.

...I've heard they textured the back sides of these milk glass lenses in an effort to diffuse the light better...that globe's real...

Looking for better Gulf items: signs, globes, cans and paper - especially porcelain Gulf flanges, and Gulf A-38 & A-62 ad glass...

These were made in 16 1/2" & 15".
I have a single 15" lens.
The SPECIAL appears to be a thin layer of glass fired on to the lens, the red is printed & fired on also.
The back side is bumpy like an orange.
Some globes had the same lens on both sides, others have the SOCONY SHIELD on 1 side.

...the SONY shield globe was another globe entirely, used for Socony Motor Gasoline, Standard of NY's regular grade - Socony Special Gasoline was a premium grade, non-leaded gasoline...I have the matching red, white and blue pump sign for this globe, it's the same size as the "Socony Gasoline, best results, uniform quality" pump sign, but with squared (not rounded) corners, and somewhat heavier gauge construction...and while I don't have it in front of me, the text on THAT sign refers to the fact that it's non-poisonous, which makes sense after the tetraethyl poisonings in the mid-20's...similar ads for Gulf No-Nox make roughly the same statements...

...the paint on the milk-glass lenses is fired-on, just like on a one-piece milk-glass globe, or an ACL soda bottle...
