Hey Guys & Gals,

It's time to share the petro relics that we've stumbled across in our recent travels, and check out what other people have found as well.

If you would like to contribute to this feature, simply post the pictures here or email them directly to me and I will post them for you. Be sure to include a story or description with your submissions.

If it's too close to the next installment, please note that I may hold your contribution for posting when the new FATW comes up.
Send 'em in!!

Happy Trails!

Wes

To start things off, I'd like to give an update on the restoration of Decatur's only remaining original 1930s Texaco station. For those of you who may not remember, here it was from a FATW post back in the summer of 2006:

A year and a half later, I noticed that the building was being restored:

You can see and read more about the restoration in the Jan 2008 FATW thread:
http://www.oldgas.com/forum/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=92220&page=1

As of December, 2008, the restoration is progressing quite nicely. Note that almost all exterior restoration is now complete. Focus has now been set on the interior of the lubrication (left) bay and the bathrooms. i think it looks great!

The stained glass window is shown here behind a protective acrylic or polycarbonate panel. This stained glass window is actually a reproduction of the original. The station's original window is displayed safely in the station's office area.

Great attention has been paid to the details of this restoration. The original steel-frame windows were painstakingly restored, with new sections welded in to replace the portions that had rusted away over the years.

I'll keep everyone updated as the restoration progresses. I'm hoping to be able to get some interior shots soon.

THIS GAS STATION IS GOING TO BE TORN DOWN IN THE NEXT FEW WEEKS SO I DECIDED IT WAS TIME TO QUIT BEING LAZY AND POST SO PICTURES OF THIS PLACE BEFORE ITS GONE FOREVER. THIS USED TO BE A CITIES SERVICES THEN IT WAS GULF, THE GULF PAINT JOB JUST RECENTLY FELL OFF. THATS HOW I FOUND OUT IT WAS A CITIES SERVICES.

Next let's take a look at some very nice little 1920s brick canopy stations.

This one has some bays added, but even they look pretty old.

This one is abandoned and beginning to fall into disrepair. Sure wish I could see what's inside...

This Kaiser/Frazer neon is hanging on the front of a classic car museum.

That's all I've got for now, but keep your own pictures coming!

Wow -I'm wondering if that big Cities sign is made of porcelain panels?

JimT,

I'm pretty sure it is. That building's mirror-imaged twin is here in Decatur, and the pylon is porcelain-paneled with the logo in it. Other porcelain panels on the front of the building have green accent stripes. This building appears to be built on a steel frame, and therefore it should be possible to disassemble and relocate it.

I think that would be worth checking into there!!! Would hate to see all that lost forever to the dump or scrap yard frown
Or like Wes said it could be relocated.
