Started collecting a few, and have questions.
Are they still manufactured NEW? Or in reproduction maybe? Or are they just old pieces from the oil can era, NOS or used?
Thanks in advance...
Max

Max, The paper label Sinclair banks are from the 80's and 90's. They were available at Sinclair stations then. They don't have the collector appeal of the older banks. Don't know about repops but you need to watch for upperlube cans that someone has cut a slot in. I have a friend that has a very nice collection of these banks. If you have any questions I can put him in touch with you. Bob

Bob is right on the paper label Sinclair banks and the upperlube cans. I purchase some of the Sinclair banks from a station near Oklahoma City in about 1992. Upperlube cans that have been converted to banks can sometimes be very difficult to detect. If the slot has been cut with the lid attached it is usually crudely done and easy to dectect. If a new top has been added the slot may look perfect. Many banks have statements on them relating to savings or such that make their purpose very clear. Original banks started in the 1930s and were given away into the 60s. I don't know of any reproductions, but there are some fantasy banks out there (banks that never existed as originals). I have seen some Gilmore, Harley Davidson and some other west coast brands. They look too new to be mistaken for original banks although NOS finds do come up. A vendor at Iowa Gas had a case of 50 NOS Signal banks from the late 50s. Bank collecting can lead to a large collection with more than 200 available. Banks were also used in Europe, Canada and Austailia making an International collection possible. Bill Fortune
