I don't know how I got here. I mean, how did this happen? I am a Mopar vintage muscle car fan/owner. I had a new 69 GTX "back in the day" and bought another one last year after I retired. My wife and I are having a great time with it going to car shows and cruise nights. Life was good. Then, a friend gave me an original ECO Model 98 Tireflator. I decided to restore it to its former glory and put it in my garage so I started doing research on the net. Then it happended: I got hooked... on old gas station memorabilia. I'm a born collector (militaria) and have been for many years. So I know that studying your field of collecting is important. And it takes years to amass this knowledge. I only have a 1 car garage so am not looking for gas pumps and other large items. But a few nice signs would look cool around my GTX. Since I live in the Great White North, I'd prefer signs that were used in Canada. So my question is: where do I start? How do I avoid being ripped off with repros? What do I read?

WELCOME to OLDGAS You will find out soon this "Hobby" is VERY ADDICTIVE ! WE all started out just wanting 1, like a junkie only wanting 1 fix then another & another etc etc . . . . . . . . . . . Restore a pump for the wife [might get 1 in the house then]. Get all the repo catalogs you can, so you will have a good idea what has been repo'd. Read old post & do lots of searches on oldgas. Network just like you do with the car guys [start with Wes Hague]. Visit as many collectors/collections as you can. Got a question, ASK. We can't help if we don't know what the question is. You are among Friends NOW, so enjoy. db

Bernie, welcome to the site! With the GTX, a G&B Trimline, Bennett 3112 or the Tokheim 952-AT, as well as, some other pumps would be "period correct" and look real good as a display. I have a 1 car garage and it is surprising how much one can "cram" into it and still have room for your car.

Bernie, Welcome to Oldgas.com Shop Talk. Reading the discussions here will help you avoid paying vintage price for a fake. Asking questions will bring out info from those who have been there before.
A great spot for a gas pump is outside, right next to your garage door. I put one there and my wife even approved, afterwards.

...welcome to the site & hobby...the larger signs are less-repro'd than the smaller stuff, as a general rule...Don's right - soak up as much information as you can from the web and swap meets, and some helpful hints around Christmas will get you a library of reference books (and your friends/relatives will be relieved that they can easily find a gift for you)...I would add, learn how to post photos on this site with your questions..."a picture is worth..." etc.
Looking for better Gulf items: signs, globes, cans and paper - especially porcelain Gulf flanges, and Gulf A-38 & A-62 ad glass...

Welecome Bernie I also have a 69 GTX.I also love all the pumps and signs,it's just as enjoyable of a hobby as the cars.I hope you have a good size garage the stuff seems to multiply fast.I started out just wanting one pump to display I probably have 25-30 pumps and have sold or traded over 50 of them over the last few years. The more your around some collections and look at stuff I think you will get a feel for whats real or fake, but I'll admit once in awhile it's tough.Ask alot of questions and you'll be ok.Try to post a pic of the X in the non petro disscusion area. Good Luck Joe

Welcome Bernie. You're off on the right foot already.....asking questions on the premier site on the web for this hobby. I ask questions all the time and almost always get the info. I need to make an informed decision. Pictures go hand-in-hand with questions so always have a camera at the ready. Make a few friends and contacts and use your collectors' instincts.

OBVIOUSLY THE SMALL ONES ON TOP ARE THE REPOPS. THE 42 INCH ONE IS REAL AS IS THE CHRYSLER LIT LIGH, WHICH IS JUST A COVER.

Wow!!! What a fantastic collection of Mopar stuff. And I love that red Challenger. Very cool.
If you decide to move any of it (at least one of those cool Mopar signs), please let me know. Mopar or No Car!!!!
