I recently aquired a old porcelain gas station sign that has been used for other advertising purposes lately. It has what appears to be a oil based paint over the original sign. What is the best way to remove the paint with out harming the enamel on the porcelain. Does any one know or come across this problem before. Thanks for any suggestions.

Aircraft stripper brushed on and scrape with plastic scrapers only. 0000 steel wool will remove small flecks soften by the stripper. Depending on coats, removal may take several applications.

Anything that will dissolve the paint be it lacquer thinner, paint thinner, paint remover or what have you will work. you don't have to worry about anything that will damage the porcelain (enamel) unless it has flouric acid in it. (Used to etch glass) Let me know if you have any questions as I have worked with enamels/porcelain for a number of years. (studio89@cdsnet.net)
