...well, the metal restoration guy ought to be able to determine what the original plating metal was...I'd replate them the same way and repaint the letters as they were originally...they should look like a million bucks when finished...

...I'd guess the wheels would have been white with black numbers...

Looking for better Gulf items: signs, globes, cans and paper - especially porcelain Gulf flanges, and Gulf A-38 & A-62 ad glass...

I don't remember what color the number wheels were since I was concentrating so hard on the faces!! LOL Joe should have the computer tomorrow and then we'll know but I think it was white wheels with black numbers!
I should hear back from the metals guy that I sent them to also. He said he'd give me a call after he received them and give me his opinion before he starts on them! It'll be interesting to hear what he has to say! I'll post any info that I receive!

Kevin, did you get these back yet? Did you show them in another thread if you have received them?

The way they got the raised lettering, was by coating the metal in the places they wanted to stay high, and put it in a chemical bath with a current of electricity. This will dissolve the metal they wanted to remove... well, that is sort of a quick Reader's Digest version. You can read more here- http://steampunkworkshop.com/electroetch.shtml

Capt Quirk,
Respectfully; Are you serious?
While electro etching is one way of creating the effect, I think your wrong in how these were made, just look at them. Think about it, 1935-1938, even today it wouldn't be done this way in production due to costs. Cheaper to roll or stamp...especially with these elevations.
