Just finished painting & decaling this old window cleaning box and wondered what may have hung from the small hooks on each side below the squirt bottles.

I am from the era when these were in gas stations, but I don't recall what hung on the hooks. Maybe a squeegee, chamios or whisk broom?

Hi 540,

Ihave one also, given to me by a former station attendent. He said the little hooks were to hang what he called "finger brushes" on. The brushes were used to clean bugs off the windshielts. Small brushes with a finger sized hole in the handle; work with it or hang it up. I think I've got one somewhere.

Actually , either one was found on the hooks ! Phillips 66 was big on sweeping the front of the car out and so was Amerada Hess too. These windshild / towel dispensers were also seen at Atlantic service stations , home of that " Red Ball Service " ! Ed Shaver

see ya on the road folks !

Thanks Guys,

I would like to see pictures of the brushes if possible. Now I need to integrate the box into my Gilmore island display.

Hi 540,
When he gave me the brush he said they don't make these any more; you will never find another one. My box and brush are late 50's early 60's. You might consider "fudging it a little" and put up any small brush with a hook on it or go along with Ed and put up small whisk brooms; might be easier to find.

I have an extra "Filmfyter" decal for your windshield washer station and I will sell it for $11.99 + $1.00 shipping. They want $19.99 on the internet for the same decal. I only have one left so give me a call @ 406-543-0934.

Thanks,
Freddie

ss540, great job. Where did you find the service box before restoring it? Are they easy or hard to come by????

Thanks and once again, very nice.

Dave

Bought the box on ebay about 2 years ago and got in a bidding war with another person, so I paid a premium for it at $125 if I recall. It was covered in several layers of brushed on latex paint, but otherwise in decent condition. I had it chemically dipped to get the paint off and still had to scrape some out of nooks & crannies.

I don't see many of the real ones from service stations, but there are some repro's on ebay.

Hi Lawfish,

540 is about right on the price from what I have seen; $100 to $150 for a good one. Looks like he got a good one. There are a few things to watch out for. Does it have the "guts" in the bottom of it so it will actually dispense towels? Does it have the hooks under discussion on it? Is the mounting bracket on the back of it? I didn't know they had been repoped; thanks 540.

Mine didn't have the mounting bracket and I missed one on ebay recently. It does have the guts on the bottom to dispense towels. Once I decide on a place to mount it with my Gilmore island, I will post a picture. I may try to find a cast base and put it on a pole. Anyone have a cast base they want to part with?

I don't mean to hijack your topic, but thought this was a good place to share what I was ecstatic to find recently.
I collect Sunoco,so while walking through a local flea market with my mother recently,I came across an elderly woman who was selling wooden spoons. While my mom talked with her,I heard her mention she had a father who ran a gas station back in the 1940-50's-60's.
I stepped up into the converstaion and politley asked what brand.."....Sunoco"..she replied.
I asked if she had any photos or promo items from it,back in the day.She said she might have some photos, but will have to look.
I gave her my phone#,and she called me back a week later, saying that she did't find any photos or tidbits, but did find a white metal box way back in the attic that I might be interested in.She said her father removed it after the station changed hands, and stored it ever since."It held towels and cleaner" she spouted. She went on to say that she also found a second identical one next to it,along with a bag of hardware & brackets too.
I drove over to her house and upon seeing it all, offered her a price twice as much as what has been quoted here for each box,as I felt more then happy to pay that and felt these items justified it.
To say she was exciteded with my offer woulda been an understatement.
Below is what I found..I removed one of the gas grade charts to show what is underneath both.
