You will need a copy of my revised Gas Pump Book for this question.

On page 30 and 31 I identify the AMCO as a American Pump. AMCO never made anything they were a petroleum equipment distributor who put their name on it.

On page 227 I identify this pump as being made by Neptune.

I have also seen this pump with "FEDERAL" on the face.

On page 41 I show this pump as the American Beauty. It is the same as the 800 with a bezel around the face, and identical to the 900.

My opinion now is that this pump was made by American and sold to others.

Do any of you have one of any of these and what is on the ID tag?

I've got two American 900 pumps - a tall version and a short version.

Here is a shot of the tall one.



As you can see the faceplates do say 'American' on them and I'm pretty sure the nameplates do too. However, I can't seem to find the plate off of this pump. I remember taking it off and putting it away - but I've done such a good jobe of putting it away that I can't find it now! LOL

The nameplate on this pump is HUGE! The approximate size is 6" tall by 8" wide.

This pump was found in it's original paint - red as shown. And was originally shipped as a Farm Pump. Note the single faceplate with the number of Gallons pumped where the price would normally be (the other side is blocked off with a piece of sheet steel instead of the door glass). And why they thought they needed to show the 'price per gallon' - I don't know. The farmer wouldn't have cared.

(Joe: have you ever seen a VR unit that had the gallons where the total price would have been?)

I hope this helps. If I run across the nameplate - I'll scan it and post a shot of it too.

Any chance I can get a picture of the entire pump? I would also be interested in pictures of the short version. Would also need your permission to use the pictures if I every print another version of the GP ID book.

Just like the BOWSER pumps that were sold by MERIT, I believe AMERICAN made the pumps that were sold as FEDERAL & AMCO.

The American Beauty was a top of the line model w/ glass top & fancy bezel.

I'll try and get you some full-length photos of the pumps later in the spring.
The short pump is stashed away in my Grainery right now and inaccessable.

As you can see, I took the top off of the short pump to put it on the tall pump. The short pump top has provisions for a globe mount. The 'farm' pump didn't need a globe so the top is not set up for one.

You might also note the Stationlighter in the background. I have no idea what it is off of originally - but the corner detail on the 'lighter and the pump(s) themselves are damn near identical. My plan is to mount the Stationlighter to the short pump and turn it into a display cabinet (I don't have doors for the short pump).

Then I plan on painting both pumps in the same color scheme (Kunz) - and using the 'display' area for my small Kunz collection.

Hopefully, I can find the pump plate one of these days. LOL

Larry, your American is awsome!!! I would like one of those for my collection. A 900 would be ok, but I like the 800s better.

Since I never found evidence of American ever making a short pump I assumed (but never stated) that the 900 tall was their last pump.

Check and see if the ID tag on your short 900 also states Tokheim, because by 1948 they owned American?
