I open this thread because it will be interesting do a list of movies that contains scenes with gas stations, pumps, globe, signs, etc... I would that each of you remember a movie and add at least the title.

Let's start:

Wanishing point (Chevron gas station with 2 visibles and 1 Wayne 60)

Doc; the stooges short is one of my favorites also. one of the few times I've seen the mobil curb signs displayed different than the usual cast iron base and pipe.

Petro pumps, that was the first thing I thought of and also the Western Auto store in that movie as well. There are a couple stations and several signs in one of the greatest movies of all time...Smokey and the Bandit.

"Talent for the Game" Scene occurs around mid movie where Edward James Olmos tries to convince the father of a baseball prospect to let him sign with the Angels. It has an old station/garage with a Mobil sign and two Bowser 575's done up in Phillips 66.

Recommend the Mad, Mad,etc. but be sure to get the DVD of the movie and watch the service station portion in slow motion. All kinds of doubles doing all the stuff, especially around the garage door.

For you younger guys, the "Thunder Road" movie described above is the original with Robert Mitchum, and if you ever get a chance to watch it, that is Mitchum singing the "Thunder Road" song, I believe it was the only song he ever recorded.

About 15 years ago I would sit watching old movies with the VHS recorder button in my hand and as soon as a service station came in the screen I would hit record. I have some great screens, one I remember mostly was Humphry Bogart pulling up to some visible pumps while driving the oldest truck you ever saw. Will try and find the old VHS.

Great subject, keep it going.

Here are a couple from different periods of time:

GRAPES OF WRATH.That one's an early classic ,IMO,showing some great shots of 30's and 40's stations. It was filmed in the early 40's as I remember.

WILD HOGS.I think that came out last year.It was filmed here in NM so a friend of mine helped provide some of the props. They bought some pumps from him and blew them up.They wanted to rent his Frontier sign, but he didn't want to chance damage. So, they took a pic of his and made a prop for the movie using his as a pattern

The Sinclair station in Driving Miss Daisy is/was in Lithia Springs GA. about 10 miles from where I grew up in Austell.
It is almost a stones through away from
I-20 & Thorton Rd./ Camp Creek PKWY.
It may be gone now. I was in PA. the week they filmed...D'OH.
The station was already closed for biz , the came in painted , setup pumps and signs, filmed, then left.
There is only a few seconds of it in the movie.

How about the two pumps standing outside the restaurent in "Green Dried Tomatoes." Actually it shows pumps from many years later also, then what the building look like today. Understand it is somewhere in Alabama and has become a tourest stop.

Scott Anderson of Time Passages also supplied the Sinclair station for the movie Avalon http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b37auo3dSuM
During a trip across the States with friends in 1996, we visited him in Des Moines and he talked about the Texaco station and showed us pictures of him with Clint Eastwood. He was very kind inviting us to the restaurant and that evening we had lot of fun.

in the movie version of Arlo Guthrie's epic song "Alice's Restaurant," i believe there is a scene with Arlo outside a Gulf station with the older, all capital letters "GULF" signage.

I JUST TOOK OUT FROM THE LIBRARY AND WATCHED "INVENTING THE ABBOTTS." A VERY GOOD FLICK SET IN THE 1957-60 TIME ERA. SEVERAL SCENES WITH THE SAME GAS STATION AS THE OLDER OF TWO BROTHERS WORKED THERE.

HOWEVER, I DID SPOT A GOOF OR SLIP-UP IN THE SOUND DEPT. AT ONE POINT THE YOUNGER BROTHER DOUG PULLS IN FOR GAS. HE GETS OUT OF THE CAR AND OLDER BROTHER CJ PUTS THE NOZZLE IN AND THEY HAVE A CONVERSATION. OTHER THAN THAT IT IS TOTALLY SILENT! ABSOLUTELY NO SOUND FROM THE PUMP AND NO DINGING OF A BELL AS THE GALLONS PASS THRU! LOL!

"panic in the year zero" with ray milland. he gets gouged at the pumps for about $3.00/gal. after an ICBM hits L.A.. try to check out some episodes of "route 66". for years vanishing point was butchered by the local t.v. stations. finally saw it on fox movie channel, there is a scene when kowalski pulls up to a mobil station in the middle of desert, a young woman is jockeying M & S/wayne 80 pumps if i remember correctly. they were not script tops.

"About 15 years ago I would sit watching old movies with the VHS recorder button in my hand and as soon as a service station came in the screen I would hit record. I have some great screens, one I remember mostly was Humphry Bogart pulling up to some visible pumps while driving the oldest truck you ever saw. Will try and find the old VHS"

"they drive at night" saw it lately on dvd.

I've seen Back to the Future dozens of times, but most recently I noticed (besides the 1955 Texaco station) in the back of Biff's waxing job pick-up there looks to be a case of Quaker State motor oil.

I was about contacted by a man in Atlanta about restoring a computer for an A-38 done in Phillips for an upcomming Movie supposedly about Jackie Robinson. Called "42" ????? The movie guys were impatient and he contacted me too late so I never got the job.
In Driving Miss Daisy, the Sinclair Station they stopped at was in the town I lived in at the time. I was in PA at the time of the shooting ..........ARG!!!!

There were about three or four different types of pumps over the course of the series. Always selling that quality ACME brans of gasoline...

Speaking of Andy Griffith, the movie "No Time for Sergeants" was on today with Andy in it. He was handcuffed to a couple of old gas pumps in the opening scenes.

Yes, A bad day at blackrock. There are many scenes of those visibles. The one scene Robert Ryan was gassing up his car and you can see the gas getting lower in the cylinder.

Anyone remember/know what kind of pumps were in the 1972 classic Deliverance staring Burt Reynolds and John Voight? If memory serves me right, they were filling up the international carryall just before or during the unforgettable dueling banjo scene. A true classic.....

I watched the 1941 Abbott and Costello film last night called Hold That Ghost. In one scene they are gas station attendants. Nice pumps in that one.

One of my favorite service station scenes is with the Three Stooges.

I am a fan of the movie "O Brother where art thou," and watch it many times. The last time I spotted a mistake in a gas station scene.

The movie takes place approximately in the mid-1930s, during the time of the building of the Tennessee Valley Authority.

After Delmar becomes a frog, Everett and Pete are driving Baby Face's car and they stop at a gas station.

The scene starts on the left side of the station where you can see the two visibles, then moves around to the front of the station. Now you can see what is on the right side of the visible. It is a 1947 ECO Model 98 Tireflator.

I didn't take time to review the thread in case it was already mentioned, I always liked the movie Lilies of the Field. Wayne 70 at the restaurant where Sidney Poitier eats breakfast while the Nuns go to Mass. Brady
