I am totally new at this, but I just acquired a nice Bowser 575. Want to bring it back as a Mobilgas pump. Does anyone know if the signs were metal, or vinyl decals on the sides? Know of availability of the correct items?
Thx,
Ed.

Signs were porcelain metal pump plates on the front and back of pump doors, not the sides. Real signs are on ebay all the time. better off just buying out of one of the gas pump catalogs with reproduction parts. Just like the original parts but a lot cheaper for restoring a pump. Hope this helps. Welcome to oldgas.

Hi Ed,
Welcome to Oldgas.com Shop Talk!

Either decals or signs were used at times over the years on Mobilgas pump doors according to the book, Guide to Gas Pump Restoration. The shield-shaped porcelain signs are very classy looking and are preferred by many. Decals (or reproduction signs) might be the prudent choice if theft is possible on an outside pump or cost is a concern. You can make a decal look kinda like a sign by mounting it on a piece of magnetic material cut to fit.

'Keyhole' shaped lithographed signs were also used on pumps made before the end of WWII.

Appreciate it guys.
New question.....the two hooks that catch and hold each of the doors closed rotate on the shafts, so the doors won't stay snug....got a good fix for that?
I guess I need to buy a resto-book before long, huh?

Yeah, but the doors still don't stay tight. I'll try again and let you know. Sounds like the shaft is supposed to be offset and work like a cam......
Thx.

Heck, that was simple. Instead of pulling the lever toward the center of the pump, I pushed them out towards the doors....ta-da!! Fixed!
