Can't get the set screw on the reset crank loose. It's been soaking with penetrating oil for two weeks now. Handle pointed down with oil setting right on top of the set screw. It has a slotted screw head so I'm afraid of putting too much pressure on it.

Any ideas?
Here's the pump I'm working on.
Thanks for your help...

Those can be real hard to get off. If you try and heat it you will ruin the handle.

Its not the end of the world if you ruin the handle assuming you can get an original or a repro to replace it.

A couple ideas for removing screws:

If the slot is messed up - fill it with valve grinding compound and then work your screwdriver blade in. The compound plus the pressure of the blade will help re-cut the groove to allow a better bite. The compound will also take up space making a tighter fit.

Snap-On makes a screw extractor that's used on an impact gun. It vibrates the head of the screw and has a side lever you turn to get the screw out.

Using a speed handle with an apex bit attached will give you much better leverage.

Dave's right about ruining the handle...Try a dremmel tool with a cutting blade. Cut through the handle at a vertical angle, taking care not to cut the crank rod. Pick up a new crank handle, you'll be glad you did. No handle is worth two weeks of soaking and worry. Paul www.severngaspumps.com

Yeah, I was looking at the buying the new handle idea. I'm going to cut off a screw driver and give it a few shots with the hammer before I give up.

Thanks for the ideas.

i was heating the reset crank shaft on a tokheim 39 on the inside of the pump got it almost red and heard a thump....the aluminum reset meled of and fell on the floor. had probably had the torch on the shaft less than 30 sec and it turned into a puddle of melted aluminum. chris

In my experience, the screw driver slotted screws usually aren't hardened. I've drilled them out with a good carbide drill. But you'll probably ruin the existing threads in the handle. Sam
