Now that I have a picture of it---Can anyone tell me what I should have to pay for an old compressor like this? Some one must have a value they can put on it! I realize that the newer compressors are faster and more effecient but this one is pretty cool, don't ya think? Am I crazy to even consider it??

With so many new car dealers going out of business we have seen a great deal of auto equipment, including air compressors, in the auctions. Modern, not too old compressosrs are going for $350.00, I paid $35.00 for my Curtis that I described in an earlier post.

IMO, old compressors are great, much better than any of the home depot junk you'll get now and even on par with many more modern compressors if properly maintained. They seem to run slower and cooler. With that being said, that one doesn't look to have the biggest tank. I see old Kellogg American, Devilbiss, Westinghouse, etc compressors with 60-80-100 gallon tanks routinely selling for $175-350 in good shape. I picked up my 1952 Kellogg American 60 gallon for $250 and it had been recently rebuilt. It's a dual stage, 220v hardwire. Total workhorse. I wouldn't pay more than $150 for that one, but that's if you plan to use it. As for collectability, I don't think it's being a Wayne makes it really any more valuable.

Looks to have a Upgraded Shutoff. As an "Antique" to go along w/ your pumps, IF complete, $100. To use on a daily bases, $50.

It looks like the recovery rate would be very slow. And it's a single stage which will not be able to achive higher pressures.I THINK!! Bigger,go bigger,go bigger

Cool piece to look at Kevin, I would buy it if cheap and get a bigger 2 stage for your shop. JM2C

OK! I'm going with you guys on this one. Its cool to look at but he wants a LOT for it, so I'm going to pass and shop the internet for some big old late model 2 stage that looks like its had very little use! I appreciate the advice on this one!---KEVIN

With all the auctions you go to, should be easy to find one locally & reasonable.

Kevin,
When you look for a compressor, I wouldn't go any smaller than a 60 gallon tank w/2 stage pump if you plan to sandblast, paint with an HVLP gun, etc (all the fun things we like to do). Perhaps look up the CFM requirements of some tools you'd like to use and use that as your evaluating factor when looking at compressors. The CFMs listed at 45 psi, 90 psi, etc are continuous, meaning what you could expect running constantly. If you're only going to use a high-CFM tool intermittantly, you can get away with a lower CFM compressor if you give it time to catch up.
Don't be afraid to look at older compressors if they've been maintained, for the right price (and are of a major brand that you can still get parts and rebuild kits for). I know of shops around here that are using big old compressors that have been passed down for 3-4 generations now and still put out a ton of air.
