Could be for a road side diner, a motel, cabins, just about anything. Match it up with any verticle neon or lighted sign, would look great, how about over your front door.

I've seen that particular arrow light used on dealer lots indicating a "USED CARS" lot,and for a Chicago city garage level "PARKING" lot.

If the lights flash in sequence, it's called a "chaser arrow," if that's the term you're looking for. Coldpizza is right about them being used more in Illinois for Used Car lots and parking garages, but you did occasionally see them at cut-rate gas-for-less stations.

i will, i prepped last night & checked all sockets, they all work & i guess there is no sequence to the lights,i was really hoping they would have been chaser lights, then i could have got into some muti colored bulbs, that would have been a nice touch ....oh well , im blastin it tonight, went to tractor supply & bought some heat resistant , hi gloss engine paint "red & white" give it a little two tone paint job!

I'M STILL VERY INDECISIVE RIGHT NOW ,,SUGGESTIONS & IDEAS WANTED! ILL POST MORE A I PROGRESS THROUGH THE PROJECT! THANKS FOR THE IDEAS!

That will look great painted. Go to a sign shop and see how much to put a sequencer in there so the lights will chase each other-either one by one going around or by twos going from the end to the tip of the arrow. If you find a little motor setup inside it running a cam next to contacts, it was a flashing light of some sort

YOU KNOW MARK I'M COMPLETELY OPENING IT UP TONIGHT ,BECAUSE AFTER SEEING OTHERS AS I RESEARCHED THIS SIGN IT SEEMS LIKE THEY ALL ARE CHASERS OF SOME SORT,IF IT WAS ,THEN HOW WOULD THAT WORK,DOSE THE LIGHT SEQUENCE AUTOMATICALLY KICK IN , OR DO YOU HAVE TO LOOSEN A BULB TO CHANGE SEQUENCE ???LOL?? YOU KNOW,WHAT WOULD I DO THEN? WHO KNOWS ,IM SURE I'LL GET IT FIGURED OUT!

Chris After getting my neon chilis clock I started looking at all neon stuff. The sequencers, flashers etc kind of work the same. You have a small motor that spins a cam. the cam is connected to electrical contacts that are like an old telegraph.
the cam spins, raises one of the contacts to the power and the lights connected to that contact come on. the cam raises the next contact in line, those lights come on after the first lights go off.
As they light up one after another, your mind sees them as chasing each other. You could have all the lights hooked up to this where it blinks all of them off and on at the same time(there are Xmas wall plugs that do this too)
Think of it as pistons in an engine firing each cylinder at a time.

I'm glad to see I am not the only one with an arrow - mine was originally bought for an OK tire store in the 50's and never installed, everything was in the original box, it all worked except one original light bulb. It has the motor and cam sequencer that flashes every other bulb to make it look like it is chasing I have had it for about 15 years, but even back then the $20 I paid for it was a bargain

Those arrows were mass produced and used as an add on to other larger signs. I would like to make a suggestion, See if you can find a sign supply shop near you and ask them if you can buy some sign bulbs to use in this. Sign bulbs are specially designed for use in this type of sign. They are low resistance, 130 volts, and 11 watts They have a nice glow, but are not overwhelming like standard household bulbs. They also use much less electricity, and produce less heat. You can find these bulbs at Lowe's or home depo but they are much more expensive there.

AWWWWW MANNNNNNN THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR SHARING THOSE PICS ,IM ASSUMING YOU CUSTOM FITTED THE OK SIGN BETWEEN? WOW WHAT A KILLER PIECE! Chris, the sign had the reader in between the arrow, it read "Freds Furniture Sales" I had the OK decals made (36") & applied them....turned out pretty good, this sign had the original chaser motor & points in it, very noisey but worked great. Your sign turned out great, enjoy it !

Great forum on arrow signs. I just recently purchased an old 60's arrow sign that I am redoing. The arrow has about 80 bulbs on both sides and almost have of them don't work. Any idea how to fix the sockets that aren't working. Could it be that I have the wrong size bulb?? I am just screwing one in to test and then taking out?? Any ideas would be helpful...
Thanks,
Lance

I have an opportunity to purchase one exactly like Chris's Arrow. What are the value of these? The person wants 100.00 bucks But I need to take it down off the pole and it will need to be blasted and repainted. Just wondering if it is worth the trouble and time. Thanks

At $100. bucks i would say yes, you know there some folks that attach some beefy prices on these arrows 2-3k range "ebay" ,i don't have a clue if they ever fetch that kind of money,i doubt it. But for 100 bucks you can't go wrong & could recoup your money if you ever sold ! imo

i have always liked those arrow signs. have my eye on a couple around here, but never stopped . never knew what to offer. what is a fair price? They generally bring $250-$400. A NOS one from 1961 recently sold for $500. They are pretty common...and pretty cool!

Well I finally managed to get up to the seller today to pick up the arrow. Another restoration piece I have no time for to add to the list! Oh well gotta get them when you can. And for $100 plus a little gas I think it was a good deal. On the same pole, underneath the arrow was this great old no parking sign which she threw in to the deal.
