TEXACO porcelain letters - Help?
I have a set of TEXACO porcelain letters that are 10 inches tall. The only thing I can find in the way of info is a set listed in Summers and Priddy's book GAS STATION MEMORABILIA. But those are 8 inch and say they should be lit with neon, but I'm not sure how.
I thought these might have gone on a delivery type truck??
They are new old stock from a bunch of stuff in a bulk warehouse I picked up a few years ago.
I was thinking about selling them and would like to pass on the correct information to the buyer, as well as ask a fair price. They say MADE IN USA on some and have dates on the back. Although some are dated differently. Looks like made in 1940.
Any ideas?
Thanks.

Letters in the book.

My letters.

I saw them on a horse drawn tank wagon once, pretty sure that's where they belong.

I have to agree with Greg--I saw a set on ebay about a year ago and they had come from a tank wagon of some sort. Being produced in the 40's, they sure could have been used on motorized bulk delivery trucks too.

Truck letters for sure (maybe wagon too though the 1940s is awfully late for wagon stuff).

I do not believe these were ever designed for neon.

I don't believe they were for neon. I have seem them on the side of tanker trucks. I have also seen them attached to a building. i have seen them sell from $200 to $500. But, probably not in this economy.

P.S. You have the "O" going the wrong way. You need to turn it 90 degrees to the left or right. They were designed to be "flatter" than the way you have it.

I have a set of these as well, but mine are 12" tall and not dated on the backside.

Dick, I can't say I have met more than one or two people in the hobby who would have not taken that as a joke.

Dick, you seem to have a problem with most things I list for sale or say. Have I done something to offend you? I even invited you to talk at Iowa Gas and you said you would stop by our spot, but never showed up.
I don't think you are as bad a guy as you try to make people think you are. wink

Chris, I wonder what is under the tin? The building looks as if it might have been a country store or old hardware store that had some pumps? Possibly a couple visibles or curbside(s)?

Can you see inside? Might be all kinds of treasure inside? Plus, the occasional snake. LOL

I have no problem w/ you or what you sell.
After I was hit w/ Heat Exhaustion & some Bad Food @ noon on Tuesday, I never got too far away from AC or a restroom for very long.
Maybe next year.
