Dick and Ryan are right on track about restoration, I would be surprised if made more than $5.00 an hour in restoring a pump. and when I croak my kids will say "What in the H--- was he thinking"? Most guys on here do it because it is a hobby. Like Dick says do it like you want, if it is a good job the next owner can change the colors fairly easy. As far as most collectable, I look for the smaller companies, the fun for me is in the hunt. I have globes from Shell, Texaco and Phillips, but also have them from Vickers, United, Bonded 78,Spur, Platolene, Wilcox, Derby and so on and just this week a bought a sign from Coryell 70. I love this hobby.

I've supported myself, my family, and paid for schooling over nearly 18 years on hustling and restoring gas pumps. That being said, I would NEVER advise anyone to restore a pump in order to "build value" in to it...basically for the reasons already expressed. The only reason I've been able to make it is because I pre-sell restored pumps. I ONLY restore a pump if I have a buyer for it. After so many years, I've kind of found a niche restoring gas pumps for a few select collectors with big $$$$. If that wasn't the case, I would have gone broke years ago. If you want to restore it, restore it yourself as Dick said. You'll enjoy it much more and won't have big money in to it. An unrestored pump is always going to be a hundred times easier to sell than a restored one.

Man I can t argue with DB & Ryan on this at all!! Just look at Ebay. Me & another Old Gas member where talking about it & you can buy a restored pump on there for less than you would have restoring it yourself.

I have a notion to try that myself= offer it for sale-part way through a restoration and the buyer can pick the brand.
I have also considered buying a pump replacing the items missing and then reselling, unrestored. The profit margin would be better.

There's a fellow oldgasser that makes a very good living doing just that. He buys straight pumps, makes them 100% complete with all needed parts, puts new adglasses in them, and ships them down the road unrestored at a premium price. Very smart if you ask me.
