I have a Sinclair Bennett 541 gas pump that was handed down to me from my grandfather. He did an amateur restoration on it back in the late 70's. The pump signs he said are original from the early 1940's. I know how hard these are to find and if found are never in near mint condition like these. Was wondering if there is a chance there were reproduction of these made back in the 70's. Thanks for any information you can give.

I BELIEVE IF THEY ARE 11.3/4" ACROSS (EDGE TO EDGE) AND ARE WHITE AND NOT SMOOTH ON THE BACK, THEY COULD VERY WELL BE REPRO'S.

ANYWAY TO TAKE SIGN OFF MEASURE AND TAKE PICTURE OF THE BACK?

WELCOME TO OLDGAS BTW! smile

They are mounted with rivets. I would have to drill rivets out to get off. May have to do one day to find out.

HOW ABOUT JUST THE SIZE PART? I THINK ORIGINALS WERE SMALLER THAN 11.3/4" DIAMETER.

I will have to measure later this week. Had to go out of town last night, took some pictures before I left. I am a collector of the gas and oil signs for the last 10 years. I do have 2 of the other Sinclair pump signs from 1941-1942 that do not have dinosaur holding sign in mouth and they are original and they measure 11 3/4 across. But have never found originals of these to compare to. So I know that some of the signs were 11 3/4 from that time period. This is were my problem lies.

HERE'S ONE I FOUND IN THE BOOK ENTITLED "PETROLIANA I.D. AND PRICE GUIDE" BY MARK ANDERTON DATED 1999.

DESCRIBES IT AS BEING A 16" SCARCE STANDING DINO. BUT IT'S RED.
I KNOW "POPS" LASTGAS15 MIGHT CHIME IN HERE WITH SOME SINCLAIR KNOWLEDGE.

To the best of my knowledge, all of the signs like in the original post are newer, fantasy signs. The above red sign is original, and I know of two different versions of it. The second version does not have the white "tag" at the 4 oclock position. The red signs were also two different sizes

Howdy from Carrollton GA..
The pump in your avatar looks like the one w/ the signs on it.
That is a 600 series Bennett...500 series is earlier

Thanks for all the information guys. The plate says 541 but must have been changed at some time. And the guy my grandfather got these signs from must have pulled a fast one on him. Thanks for all your help again.
