Also note... I suppose you have found out by now, the doors are a pain, and the Bowser pump seems heavier than others. Good Luck.

APPEARS to be a SHORTENED 575 [575 is a 6ft pump & yours appears to be 5ft now]. IF your going to collect pumps, ya need to get THE BOOK. W/O a book your almost buying a Pig N a POKE!

I was thinking the same thing DB. It looks like the bottom of the doors have been cut off.

Doors are intact. If anything is shortened it's the base. No clue

DB has it right. The doors are cut off at the bottom. The base has not been shortened. The area between the lower chrome strip and the line DB drew should be twice as wide. Here is how it should look.

It is possible that Bowser shortened the 575 pump w/o changing the Model/Fig # like National did to the A-38

I found the model today on the pump, it says 575S, I'm assuming that means short? Is there a 575T?

I don't know if anyone will be looking at this entry because the topic is 6 months old but,,,,,
Like most of you, I believe, I am constantly looking for entries referring to my Bowser 575 and when I read this string something triggered my memory about the heights on these pumps. When ever I saw a picture of a 575 like mine something seemed "out of proportion".
So, when I read here that someone must have cut off the bottom I went out in the shop to check mine. Sure enough, mine is a little shorter too, the overall height about 5 inches short of 6 foot and it shows up at the bottom, just like the one here. The only difference is it seems there was a little more left on mine.
I had noticed when taking it apart that the bottom edges were very rough and not finished, in fact, they had burrs on them all across the pieces, doors and sides.
Looking at the bottom of the frame, from the underside, the angle iron uprights are cut off with a torch and then welded to the bottom piece. I had read somewhere in the past that (some frames were welded in place and some were bolted) so I dismissed that as normal. The unfinished ends seemed strange for “factory work” no matter how rough thins were made back in the day.
Anyhow, my total pump has been shortened down about 5 inches, the frame lowered and the doors and side panels cut on the bottoms. The work on it seemed amateurish so I don't think it was a factory operation, but someone before me starting to restore the pump and not doing to good of a job.
As far as “why” someone would do that is beyond me, unless the bottom had rusted so bad that it was a good way to save the pump. I'm glad it happened cause I still think it is a pretty cool pump for a first try. Oh yea, the number on mine is just plain old 575, not 575M for "medium", sorry I couldn't resist.
I do know factories did a lot of strange things back in the day. Chrysler ended the factory “Hemi” production in 1971 but had 7 engines left over that they put in 1972 Chargers to use them up. Maybe Bowser did “Wack” some of the pumps to use up the parts. Interesting for sure.

The one thing in the picture that is on the pump that a 575 does not have in the book and I have seen is the hose rollers. Those rollers look like they came off from a 595 and were just added to a 575 then doors were shortened thoughts anyone??

The hose roller observation is interesting because mine did not have rollers but just some straight rods. They are in bad shape and if the pump didn't come with them originally I would really like to eliminate them. Lets see if I can post a picture, will I ever be able to quit learning something? Hope not. "Book"? are you guys referring to the "PCM Guide to Gas Pump Restoration"? http://s1146.photobucket.com/albums/o521/migeo70/?action=view¤t=027.jpg

Thanks for the replies guys. I ordered the "Book" Jakes, thanks for the info.
Keithia, I like the way it looks without the guards so will leave them off. I am really curious about it being cut down and when it was done in it's lifetime. If it was done at the factory, which I doubt because of the roughness of the work (even though the frame to base alignment is perfectly square, which to me, suggests a factory job not a "hack") or by someone that was going to restore it before me. When I got it one of the door windows and one of the sight glass windows were just pieces of lexan, "Hack?". Like DB said, guess I got a "Pig in a Poke". It is going to be a nice "Pig in a Poke" when it is done and normal people won't know anyhow, what the hell, I didn't til I started to read this forum.
