Hi all, we have been talking about different methods of removing rust when restoring pumps.
Electrolysis seem popular, I use a product called "Strip All" were I dip in a heated "tank" of some sort (only used it in small scale yet but works ok). Has anyone used Evaporust? http://www.evaporust.com/ It is widely used in the car hobby but I can't recall we've talked about it here?
Any input is welcome :-)

thanks
Claes

Two of my dirt bikes had rust on the inside of the gas tanks. I filled the tanks with evaporust and let them sit for three days. It took out most of the rust, but they were not spotless. The stuff works, but don't expect miracles.

I have used it. nontoxic for one, non solvent for another-its water based.
works great on straight cast iron.
you do have to treat surface once the rust is gone or it will return, uses chelation(similiar to electroplate without the electricity)

careful soaking painted stuff in it for a long time-I ruined a 5 gallon can as it turned the paint into goo (soaking it for days though)

can get expensive for bigger parts if you need to soak something and the need for gallons of this stuff

A while back someone posted a link to a video about using molasses to derust I have been using this method and it works great. One part molasses to nine parts water.I have been using a 55 gal plastic drum and cleaned all the cast parts of an american visible and am now making a larger tank from a 275 gal tank.Bill
It also loosens stuck bolts and screws

Molasses may be a way to go - uncertain of where to buy any larger quantities (where I live)..
