Nope, never saw those cars as a kid,let alone that funny looking scoop thing hanging from the window. I do remember vent windows on cars. On a nice day, I miss real vent windows.

I noticed in the footnotes in DB's link the reference to swamp coolers. When I first saw one of these on a car at an auto show several years ago, I was told it was a swamp water cooler. When it ran out of water, you could stop anywhere and refill it with- well- water from anywhere! Supposedly one of the first in the car air conditioners had a pan for ice in which an internal fan blew air over it.

Just wanted to say thanks for taking the time to do this!I just sat here and looked at all 28 pages!Being a car guy and just getting started in the gas pumps etc. the pics were great.
And just think some of the pumps and signs in these photos are sitting and hanging in our garages!
