Watching the new Pickers show. They pass on a Tokheim 850 for $1100 without even barganing? Guess I should hit that state, so far 3 tokheim 850s on that show today.

I just watched it earlier this afternoon. I was amazed at the incredible bike collection (1,000+) that father & son team had. And the guy in Detroit that "gave" Frank that United Motors Service neon sign for $100. WOW!

Just like they bought the Radiator Cap Mascot in Long Beach last year for $50 & sold it for $1,000.

Bet you guys believe EVERYTHING the A-TEAM did too.

That show is used to get you talking and out of your chair! That united sign was nice- (there are some cases that people do not know what they have). It's amazing how these tv shows have manipulated market prices....

Never said I believe all they do, I know the guy in Gardena who they "accidently" saw their demolition shop from the street on the show. He told me his friend set it up for them to come by. Also did not believe the $100 price for the service sign. Just thought may be alot of pumps in that state

Easy! Easy! Easy! I reread it and I'm pretty sure he wasn't trying to be hostile! Was more of an offhand comment about how we all get lucky someday!

...I personally can not wait for the day when 'reality shows' are only referenced in the past-tense, and regarded with disbelief and embarrassment - like Beanie Babies, The Macarena, Vanilla Ice, or 80's hairstyles...'Pickers' sucks...it's actually doubly bad: not only is it without merit, it actually contributes greatly to the vast amount of misinformation in the hobby...the time spent watching it would be better spent on Oldgas, eBay or the other auction sites, if the goal is to see nice stuff and learn about it...

To Ryan Underthun, I think it is personal when someone who has no idea of ones money situation says you don't have the money to buy their pump and continues to write caustic remarks to my posts years later.

Show me again on this post where he mentioned anything about you not being able to afford something.

Oh wait... thats right, all of the comments your complaining about were written by you!

But remember he's an oldgas original and he has no censorship but you and I we have to watch every word we say or we may get the boot. AS FAR AS I'M CONCERNED NOBODY ON THIS SITE HAS MORE LEVERAGE OVER ANYONE ELSE. I READ THAT SOMEWHERE LAST YEAR WHEN SOMEBODY SAID THAT ALL MEMBERS ARE TREATED EQUALLY AND THAT POST NUMBERS AND LONGEVITY ON THIS SITE SHOULDN'T MEAN YOU ARE TOP DOG. AGREED HERE, BUT WHEN ONE HAND WASHES ANOTHER THEN IT SEEMS SPECIAL TREATMENT IS AFFORDED.

THIS WAS A NICE GENERAL AND VERY CASUAL THREAD THAT WENT SOUTH QUICKLY, DUE TO ANIMOSITY. SOME MEMBERS SHOULD BITE THEIR TONGUE AND REALIZE WHAT THEY ARE TYPING AND HOW IT WILL EFFECT OTHERS IN MOSTLY A NEGATIVE WAY.

Back to the pickers, hate the show but I watch anyway. At least they're not falling all over themselves saying how valuable pumps are, maybe a little counteraction to BJ prices. I'm sure we've all talked to folks that think they're unrestored 50's pump is worth thousands. They're woefully uninformed on a lot of stuff but that can be good.

This is the hostility that is being complained about?

Seems like there is more going on than that. The comment spoken about affordability at some swap meet was definitely bad, but dragging it up here is actually worse than the above quoted comment.

Take a deep breath and try not to take things so personal or assume that there is unfair bias because you do not agree. If you have a specific complaint about moderator, send me a PM, click on the "Notify" button in a post or the "Contact" link near the top of the page.

Remember the Pickers show is entertainment and shouldn't be taken too seriously either.

So, when Frank bought that 1929 Ford Model A for $6,000 or the United Motors Service sign for $100....they were lying to us?

AMERICAN PICKERS = REALITY SHOW. (3 real people doing what alot of us do or would like to do and have a TV show about it and really have a store in IOWA...sounds real to me!)

DUKES OF HAZZARD = FANTASY SHOW.

IT'S LIKE COMPARING GARLIC TO PEPPERMINT.

I know that people can get great finds looking as I found that item I mentioned recently, took me 30 years of antique buying to find a deal like that. I never said I believe all that pickers say, I know the guy from Gardena who they acted like they stumbled upon his demolition company by driving by. He said his friend called them to go over and do the show so I already know some of show is fake and made up. I just do not know which items they find are really what they say they pay and what is made up, no way to know unless you know the person being filmed tells you.

I wondered about that also even though I would have liked to see the 850 up close as it looked like the upper skins were rusted through along the bottom edge and that would make it worth way less than 1100.00 to me as those skins are hard to repair.

And I can say the same for Storage wars, while I find it entertaining it would be easy for the storage company to put in those rare finds in the lockers to make show more interesting.

Doc - we don't know if Frank actually bought anything, see?

"oh, it's just entertainment, so it doesn't matter"...well, OK, but if it's just entertainment, that means it's nothing else...and because it's nothing else, Priority One for the charlatans in charge of this farce is to produce the show as cheaply and quickly as possible, get product in the can, and ride the gravy train until the 'how much is THIS worth?' TV show fad is over...which can't happen soon enough for me...there are so many channels and not enough content to fill the schedules...so these goofballs will be on TV for years to come...

...what this all means, if the show is a 'reality show' and 'just entertainment' - they have NO obligation to present anything in a factual manner...did Frank actually buy that sign or car? it doesn't matter if he did or not...the point is to film him buying a sign or car from someone...it's all about getting content for the show...

you'd have to be a first-class rube, not to understand that they make more from the show than from their little picking business...LOTS MORE...if that's the case, why bother actually buying ANYTHING? The signs, pumps, etc. are just props - just like they use on 'fictional' TV shows...why even mess with the day-to-day of running an antique shop? they don't have to...they can just ACT like they are running an antique shop...

...geez guys, remember the switcheroo they tried to pull with the Coke machines on Pawn Stars? same thing...'Resto Rick' was ACTING like he had restored a Coke machine...that's what ACTORS do...

...shoot - 'Dukes' has at least one thing (OK, two if you count Catherine Bach) over 'American Peckers': at least with 'Dukes of Hazzard' people aren't walking around believing the show is REAL...

Those pickers looked like a bunch of idiots when they couldn't tell the difference between a 1931 Model A roadster and a 1929 Coupe.

sick I hesitate to even enter this free-for-all, but only want to ad this. I stopped by the American Pickers store while back in Iowa for the Iowa Gas Show. There was hardly anything for sale but pictures, coffee mugs and T-Shirts. All the stuff you see them buy either never makes it to the store, (pre-sold) or could possibly as some suggest never bought at all. I remember the episode when they were in the Charlotte area in the old hardware store that the old mans family had been in the oil business for years. They were on the 2nd floor and passed-up a Wayne 866 that had been inside for 20 years at $600..!! At their store in Iowa tourists were all over the place taking pictures, couldn't even find a place to park! Just my info. Ed.

i too was scratching my head on the 866 episode. they recently opened a store here in nashville. although i haven't been, i did hear that the people were lined up to get in on opening day & "picked" the place clean. i'll bet there were crazies in the crowd who would have bought a turd out of the toilet just to say it came from there...

I know what you mean, seems like when I am in antique shops people act like pickers is the ones that know everything, funny I have been going to antique shops around 30 years and this show has been just the last two years and now all the people that are not dealers seem to act like Pickers are the greatest and best information that is out there. They have only been on for less then 2 years.

I met a guy at CTO this year that was on the show who bought some stuff from them. He said he did indeed buy the stuff and that they were nice guys but it is a show and you have to remember that.

The show with the Schwinn auto bike was at a shop here in Louisville and after 8 hours of filming they said they were going to get in the truck and do a parting shot, drive around the block and would be back to have a cook out. The old guy that owned the shop said you ain't going nowhere to you pay me and they did! He didn't trust them either. LOL A mutual friend was there watching them film and sent me a couple hundred behind the scene photos and said he was going to send them to your shop next. No Thanks! As far as watching, i do sometimes just to see the cool stuff!

My favorite is when someone comes to my house that does not no me and says do you know what thing is worth? Those guys on AP sold one just like it for that much. I always just smile and show them the rest of my stuff and they usually back track there comments.

I just saw the Olds license plate from last week's episode yesterday at the RE Olds museum in Lansing. I am not sure how "real" that sale was. I know both guys involved but have not talked to them

I saw that, too. It was pretty awesome! I was just at the R.E. Olds Museum about 3 weeks ago and didn't notice the license plate in that display case. But then again, I wasn't looking for it, either. Wish I would have seen this episode before we went, so we could have asked Ashley about it!

Oh, and I love how they said something about walking in the "front door", but came through the exit door that needs to be propped open in order to be opened from that direction!

Even though it's mostly fake/staged, it's still neat to see the cool things that they "dig up".

Hello Tara...how was the museum? Is it worth adding to a driving trip?
This has been a fun topic for me. I also met a couple of guys at Iowa that have been on the show. They both told me that the producers of the show are there 2 or 3 days before filming and that there are 5 or 6 camera cars and/or trucks following the guys around. We all hate it but love to watch it anyway. It is a phony as a 3 dollar bill. How about Sister Pickers...ouch

Oh yea , Now who in there right mind is going to believe That these two beautiful women that look like something that came from American house wife's. Are out trashing around a junk yard in shorts and high-heels looking for rusty junk to take back to L.A to make furniture. and sell to high end customs While some poor guy in the back is fabricating all their wild ideals in to expensive home decor. But I guess that's why they call them reality shows. Because we all know it's actuality.

RE Olds museum is a nice little museum. The 1906 Baby REO is really neat. There is a giant(10'x15' maybe) Fisher Body porcelain sign that is unbelievable. It is die cut like the coach logo and made up of several panels. I am sure it was from a factory. There are a few other signs and related items. There are also displays of Lansing built hit and miss engines.

Ray, we enjoyed the museum. I would definitely add it to a driving trip if you're going to be going near Lansing. We spent 11 hours there one day working on the brakes of the Hurst Hairy Olds, then went back the next day to actually get to look at the displays.

All I know is that the pumps, air meters, bikes, signs, and other assorted antiques are very real.

I like looking at them and from time to time even learn about the history of their manufacture and use.

I don't pay attention to supposed deals, suggested retail prices, or the phony acting.

It's the 'stuff' that keeps me watching.

I watched the first episode of the picker sisters. They bought an old house for $500. Then they happened to pass a construction crew with a track shovel, loader, dozer, crane. The girl says something like "presto, for a couple hundred bucks we had our help for a day". Anyone care to guess how much it would cost to deliver all that equipment, and hire some operators for a day?? Needless to say it was the last episode I watched. Absolutely horrible!

Although the picker sisters are hot its not nearly as interesting to me to see junk metal pieces turned into things then see real antiques supposedly being found so I just occasionally watch that show.
