I was the one that bought the Polly lens that recently showed up on eBay. As soon as I opened the box I knew it was no good, I didn't even need to flip it over. I believe the seller knew exactly what he was doing. It seemed like he went out of his way to make the pictures look unbelievably good. In fact I took over 30 pictures of it and I couldn't get any of them to look like his!!! I spoke with him before I bid and he answered all of my questions, and he knew exactly what to say. It was really a poor repop, once I could see it in person. The good news is I'm certain 99% of collectors would know it was a repop once they saw it in person. I guess someone up in that part of the country must have made some of these several years ago.
I had to go thru eBay, as the seller would not refund my money. However after sending eBay pictures, and with a letter from Scott Benjamin, eBay did refund my money. I would like to thank Scott for taking time out of his day to help me out with documentation that I could provide to eBay.

WOW, glad you got your money back, I had my doubts about it but not knowing much about globes I wasn't sure. Can you say who the seller was?

Seller was Fred Dupree, however I don't think he made them. I think someone in that area that has had some experience made them years ago.....

There was a guy named Piquatio or something like that in Spokane, he was burning people all over the place with fake globes. I know he got into Jack Mendanhall for a bunch of stuff but that was many years ago. A prominent local "collector" tried to sell me a couple a long time ago, trouble was it was a Hancock "Cock O' The Walk" but it was the later rooster. His globes looked pretty bad. This Polly however had a lot of people fooled. It would be interesting to see if he'd reveal his source, if he knew the right things to say then he obviously was coached by someone. Are the police involved or do they even care?

I am glad to see someone get caught, for not only gives ebay a black eye for a place to be extremely cautious but also our area. Have heard the name before from that area, but it was when I first was collecting about 30 years ago. Was told to watch out then for reproductions. Good job and thanks to all involved with this.

This is second hand info that I received in an email this morning, the person didn't want their name involved. I guess this Dupree guy is involved/partnered with a guy named Dave Kois. I've never heard of him but I guess he's got some history in the hobby. Kois is not shy about who made the lenses, I say lenses because I guess the other Polly sold from this area was also a fake. Kois got them from the manufacturer so there may be others. His company is Current EV Tech and his website has contact info. If it matters to anyone you might contact this guy, I was told what his answer is but won't mention it here, the whole thing is disgusting, bad enough all the repo junk being passed as original on ebay but this is thousands of dollars, someone should go to jail.

John, I am glad it had a happy ending. Fraud is rampant on ebay and probably never will be stopped. That is why I like to deal with guys like you and Lonnie. Honest all the way

Glad it worked out well for John. Lets not forget Scott Benjamin on this too. I am sure it made it alot easier for John to get his money back with the letter from a prominant author and dealer/collector. It is a good thing when everyone works together to help each other out. I also had bid on the lens, I was totally fooled by the ebay pictures. I am sure like John once I held it I would have known, but you can't hold it through the computer. Like Maurice said, better off dealing with established dealers and collectors when at all possible.

And to add to what Roger said, seems to me eBay should get some credit for doing what they say they'll do.....protect buyers from fraud like this. It's hard to stop fraud BEFORE the fact, but there is some protection after it takes place.

Guys:
I was called by a couple of collectors and asked my opinion on the lens. From the e-Bay photos, I thought it looked good. But until you actually hold something like that in your hands - it's a cr@p-shoot.
I think the lens manufacturers that frequent this site should publically swear that they never have - and won't in the future - make lenses without a current date or wording of somekind that eliminates the guesswork on the age of a 'reproduction' lens.
Those of you who know me, know that I always mark any lenses I recreate with the 'year of issue' date and my company name.
I promise that you will never hear that I tried to rip someone off by trying to pass off something I made new - as sometning old.
'Nuf said.
Later . . .

The lens was returned to the seller, that is eBay's policy.

probably doesn't matter anyway, who knows how many he made, 2 have shown up so far and what other lenses were made that weren't marked?? I doubt this person limited themselves to Polly, easy money after all, hope that not's too harsh. So what happened with the lens ? Has it been destroyed as it should be ? ;;;;;;;;;;;;Ron

Neil your not to harsh at all and I agree with you. Anyone who makes repo lenses and does not mark them is doing this hobby a big injustice
Originals only for me. Always looking for Simpson oil, Super A, and MFA oil cans and globes. Shawn Morris
