DX and Affiliates
Mid-Continent Petroleum -
Tulsa, OK.
Mid-Continent was organized in 1916 from the various holdings of oil pioneer Josh Cosden and others. Gasoline marketing under The Diamond brandname began about 1920 and by the mid-1920's, Mid-Continent operated a large number of stations throughout the Central United States. A super-premium fuel "Diamond D-X" was introduced about 1933 and by 1940 stations were branded as "Diamond D-X" stations. After WWII the brandname became simply "D-X." In 1955 Mid-Continent merged with Sunray Oil Co. and the corporate name became Sunray DX oil Company, revised in 1962 to DX-Sunray Oil Company. In 1968 DX-Sunray merged with Philadelphia based Sun Oil Company and many dual logo Sunoco/DX items were introduced at this time. DX globes had been phased out by the time of the merger. Shortly after the merger the Sunoco brandname replaced DX in states where Sunoco already marketed. The DX brand was retained in other areas until after 1980 when Sunoco began gradually replacing DX. As of this writing (1995) only small areas of DX branding remain, primarily jobber operated stations that just haven't yet been converted.

This Mini-report and explanation taken
in it's entirety with all due respect from the book: OIL COMPANY SIGNS: A Collector's Guide. By Scott Benjamin & Wayne Henderson.

Hope this explains the D-X Question!

I think DX as a brand stood for "distance" as in you get a lot of distance with this gas.

I was always told that it stood for "Diamond X-grade" (X-grade being their Premioum gasoline), hence the name "D-X".

D was for DIAMOND, X was for the unknown [it kept the other companys guessing what was added to their products].

This is what I was told at Iowa Gas.
