I see there have been quite a few lookers but no comments, so here goes. My thoughts are this isn't an old piece, but I'm not an expert. I think it's too small to be old. Are there brackets on the back for hanging or mounting? That would be a major clue of authenticity. Repros have white backs generally with no brackets mounted previous to the porcelain being fired on.

Darin,Thanks for the input.I know this is a seldom seen size. There is no question about its authenticity. It is the real deal. The man I purchased it from is the son of the old Mobil station owner. He has had it for many years. He did not know when it was used at his dads station. The station was closed many years ago.The building is still standing.I also purchased some other nice items from the old station.Check out the pics of the back and I think you will agree.Come on guys lets hear it!

I believe these were used circa 1940s-50s. They mounted to a large neon porcelain shield that did NOT have a Pegasus already on them.

I've seen the large blank neon shields only once... And was told it was missing this piece...

Just my 2 cents...

Well, it shows that an extra pic or two can tell the whole story! Obviously yes, the sign is real now that we have seen both sides. The date neon would have been added I would have no clue. Must be this is what it took to get the comments rolling, lol.

This is a very interesting topic and I would love to see one of the big blank neon shields that this might have been mounted on!
It would make sense to me as the little sign just seems too small for neon to be added to it. Also, the mounting brackets are a little strange in that they look like they would have been attached from the back with a screw thru the surface of whatever it was mounted to.
I hope someone else has some info as I love to learn about these signs that I have never seen before!
Nice piece Mark!

The fact that there is no signs of a transformer being mounted to it tells me that this was an add on to another sign, and not a stand alone unit. Also there is a lack of tube supports, and no telltale marks of tube supports being there in the first place.

Very cool topic and sign! I did a quick search of aumann auction results and found this!
I think it's similar and NOTE the hole placement for neon in comparison to this one... smile
It was 40X40 and sold for 2,000 in 2003 with touch ups! It was rated an 8...
Here is aumann auctions results link...search mobil neon...

If you look closely at the pic of the back of the sign, you can see small holes in similar positions to the one Tom posted the pic of, so there is some evidence of tube holders. One near the eye, one on each of the wing tips by the mounting brackets, so very similar points of comparison.

If you look real close, I believe you can see places where there would have been tube supports. If you look at the placement of the supports on the one that Tom posted, and then look for holes where they should be, I think they are there. Of course we're only dealing with a photo and maybe I'm imagining but it looks the same to me. Way to go Tom!

I beat you Kevin, lol. The other observation I would make is that being larger you can picture the one Tom posted being used as a stand alone sign, especially with the can around it. I agree with Kevin that it would be neat to see this particular smaller Pegasus being used on the plain shield that was discussed.
