This scenario happened to me and I'm not sure how to deal with it. Would like some veteran input. Tue morn a man man lists a sign on c-list in southern part of this state. I quickly called the man and told him I wanted it, I'd be there at 5 o'clock to get it. Deal he said, it's yours come get it. At about 430 he calls and asks if I know a " Johnny", sure I said he's a buddy of mine just down the road a bit, why? The man tells me that johnny just called him and asked to buy the sign. The seller told Johnny it was already sold that a man from Grenada was on his way to pick it up, then Johnny says I know him Allen Brown, right? Seller says yeah how you know him? Johnny replies that, the last sign he bought from me he used a bunch of counterfeit money, and that Johnny was in the area and he'd swing by and buy the sign right now. No deal says the seller I told Allen it was his and he's on the way. Well needless to say I was ***** beyond the boiling point, I told seller thank you for letting me know and I'd be there in 30 min we could compare numbers on the phone because I had my buddy Johnny ( the real one on my phone). So I get there and get the sign loaded and now it's time to compare. I showed him johnnys number and it wasn't the same number as on his phone ( big relief) I say I'm gonna call this number and see who it is lying on me. Dial the number and when I press the last digit, it says call %#%**><, another old gasser who was on my contact list. Sorry for the long post, just needed to get it out and see what y'all think.

It is no surprise, there is more backstabbing in this hobby than any other. At least you found out what kind of friend he was

Not the right thing to do but people do strange things to make a buck...hence why you must keep you back up.

It would be a very cold day indeed before I'd let someone accuse me of passing counterfeit money, and not do something about it legally. That's defamation, that's slander, that's serious stuff... at the end of the day, all one has is one's integrity...
Sucks that you know the guy, but I'd be on the phone to him pretty quick. Get it cleared up.
Always looking for Texaco Canada, Supertest, White Rose, McColl Frontenac, and Miller Oil Co. info.

But KZ it doesn't have to be that way with all collectors;only a few.Case in point:a good friend and I were about to get into it over a sign until his wife said "no sign is worth that".We are still very good friends and someone else has the sign.
Allen,my advice is to cull out other collectors (there will be more)until you can retreat into what I call "my comfort zone".Then, say nothing at all of consequence to anyone outside that zone of comfort because it will cost you something in the end;money, enjoyment of the hobby, peace of mind and so on.
It works for me;others may feel differently.

No...you have to have a "face to face" and get closure or it will "hang around". Make it short and sweet...no arguing and have nothing more to do with him or her after that. Life is too short. Stuff is stuff, but you have to call him on it(not on the phone). Integrity and character...like Silent Chief said. Oh yeah...advice is cheap. LOL Dave

Although I wouldn't press legal charges,I would surprise him in person,(no phone call or email first),as you said he's local and ask him to explain himself for his actions.Listen to him & look at him to see if he really has it out for you,or instead if he turns 3 shades of red and is sincerely apologetic. No need to post his name publically,as this is between you & him only, and posting his name will most likely squash any possible reconciliation you two may have,as well as give this hobby in general a bad name to any new comers who may sign on here & be turned away by this going public.
Nip this in the bud right now,and decide if he is friend or foe before it festers & gets uglier for both of you down the road.

Face to face? Why? He knows what he did and doesn't care (otherwise he wouldn't have done it). So you get F2F and he says "tough $#!*" - now what? Even if he apologizes do you really think it's sincere or that he found the errors of his ways? You don't need closer, you should let others know what kind of friend THEY may have in him. "I" would be much too hot headed and not trust myself enough to go face to face now, so that would give me a great deal of satisfaction (without going to jail).

legal action would be a waste of money. it's his word against the seller.
I'd confront, face to face, probably in public, definately not on his property. Take a tape recorder but check the laws in your state first.
Definately, face to face contront him. maybe wait a week or ten days so it's not fresh on his mind then get in his face. Watch his reaction as much as listen to his words.

I have thought about all these things, especially the legal action and outing this person. That's not gonna solve anything, I did talk to a lawyer and he said it was pretty open and close case, I think that the best thing is this person is reading this post and knows that he's been caught, hopefully he's man enough to apologize one day as I'm sure our paths will cross again, let this be a lesson to all, before you slander someones name by falsely accusing them of something, make sure your phone number isn't in Thier contact list.

You know the old saying fool me once !! All hobbies have things like this... Yes theres alot of competition... But for 99.9% of the time its just gut wrenching fun finding a new sign or pump....never let a few sour notes ruin the concert. I like the people in the hobby and after a 15 year hiatus, and going to the Columbus show this year I still love it.
Looking for Keystone,Pure,Sinclair,Texaco,Sterling and Gulf...Thanks, Brian

I am the kind of guy that will confront him and ask what the hell he is doing, get the other side of the story and go from there.
