I just gutted 4 pumps and wonder how to get the max. dollars from the scrap. I separate the copper(not from motors), brass, aluminum and steel which was easy. My question is what do you do with the electric motors?? Is it worth removing the copper from the motors??? Copper is about $2.80/# and scrap complete motors are $0.19/# Thanks for your advice!!

I leave the motors together and scrap them. I usually get around $.30 per pound, adds up fast.

I agree. I usually get $8 to $15 for motors at my local yard. If you try parting them, you'll end up with more work than what the copper is worth. Remember explosion-proof motors are super heavy to begin with.

Spent the whole day, today, gutting pumps. With the exception of the copper and aluminum, everything goes on the dump truck. Motors really aren't worth the trouble in this area. I just pile it on the truck and head to the scrap yard. Prices are down a bit. It paid $12.50 per hundred last week. That load brought $500.86. And...would you believe....I used to give these to a junk man years ago when prices were lower? Paul www.severngaspumps.com

I recycled a few motors into useful items; 1 was rewired to run either direction on my metal lathe, 1 for a grinder, 1 for a buffer. I give all the rest to friends for what ever they need them for.

am I figuring this right that you are getting $250/ton for regular "tin" scrap? Or are you sorting iron out of a specific size/thickness? I haven't seen regular bulk scrap metal over $200/ton around here ever that I can recall? any tips are appreciated. thanks

Signs&neons, The price on scrap iron went down from $13.50 a hundred to $12.50. Yes that does work out to $250.00 per ton. last load was slightly over two tons. I don't sort anything. Just gut the pump and load the iron, steel, asst.white metals on the truck. The copper is taken to a different scrap yard where it brings a bit more. The scrap yard, that I use, is near the marine terminal in Baltimore. The scrap is all ground up into small pieces, loaded aboard ships and sent to China. We probably are getting it back as children's toys??? Paul, www.severngaspumps.com
