I saw a similar one years ago where someone had attached a pair of fiberglass wings to a mechanical horse and painted it like the Mobile Pegasus. Some of those horses were aluminum and some were fiberglass. They are very simple affairs. It would not be difficult to do. Dave

Only two of those, made for Mobil were know to exist. Matthews auctions sold one a few years ago and it brought BIG money.

Why go to all of that trouble to just make two? For Executives ? I think that I saw a B&W photo of one years ago at some type of function. Another "holy grail" ? Dave

I should have said only two were know to exist today. They probably did have more. I also heard they were a travling exibit type of thing. Used for new openings of stations. Again this is all hearsay, stuff I have heard over the years. John

One of the remaining two used to belong to Jeff Peterson. He brouht that horse and many other Mobil pieces to Iowa Gas in the early 90's to display. In the early years, Iowa Gas would have a seperate room for display of that years company theme and the Mobil year was fantastic.
As John stated correctly, those mechanical pegasus were carried around the country and used for new station openings.
After Jeff passed away, his collection was sold by Aumann Auctions and that piece sold for a very high price.

If I remember correctly there are two types of these. They only made two of the first type, and one of them was for the president of Mobil for his child or garandchild. It was one of these that Jeff purchased and brought to Iowa Gas back in the 1990s. It was so big it was displayed outside because they couldn't get it in the door.
The second version is the one shown above. It was made for use in service stations. A friend of mine here in St. Louis has one of them and I have seen it. How many were made is unknown.
Also, if I remember correctly, "Check the Oil" magazine did a large article on them around the time Jeff brought the one to Iowa Gas.

I remember seeing one of the small one's (similar to normal SANDY dime store horse ride) inside at Iowa Gas in the Mobil Display. I'm sure it was Jeff's. There was a guy on here in the last year who said he had a pair of the chaps....... Amazing Piece!

The one that sold at the Aumann auction I think in 2005 in Bloomington IL came from the Roy Reed collection. I believe it brought over $20000 plus 10%. My cousin and I were setting in front of the guy who bought it. Heard at the time it was going to a museum in Wisconsin. Mitch
