I recently found this large heavy paper stock "Fre-Flo" winter oil banner from the Penn-O-Tex Oil Company. As you can see by the photos it's dirty, slightly stained and torn. For a 70+ year old banner it's still in remarkable shape but it could use some restoration to make it displayable. It's a large piece, approximately 3' x 5'. I recently brought it to a professional paper conservator and she quoted me $1500 to clean, repair and mount the piece.
Soooo here are my questions, anyone have an idea on value? Has anyone ever seen this piece before and let alone for sale? I believe this to be a very rare item but I'm extremely hestitant to spend big money to really preserve it right unless it's worth what I put into it.
Just as a side note, has anyone ever seen a sign or can that says "Fre-Flo"?
Thanks for your opinions! Any and all are welcome.

From the picture it looks like you have a great poster there. I understand the poster has some issues, but as a collector I would never buy a modified sign/ paper item. I could not care if it has a tear or stains because It adds to the character. I feel these items were only made once and people should leave them as is. Certain Petro items should be restored but signs and banners/posters are not one of those. If that was my poster I would build a wood frame and get some plexiglass and leave it as is. Nice piece !!!!!

do some research online, you can do a lot yourself to improve it. I've used very lightly soaped water to clean paper. Get a good flat surface and use a microfiber rag wrung out well and start in a small area, keep rinsing the rag and repeat. Make sure you dry it flat, preferably weighted. You can also buy book binding tape online for tears, it's acid free and works well. For really dirty areas try a drafting eraser, light touch and patience is the key. Nothing wrong with making something a little better.

I would take it to a frame shop and have them mat and frame it as is.

I agree frame & enjoy. Make sure you frame it in acid free paper & cardboard to prevent further damage to it.
