NICE sign; That's a difficult sign to find in any condition. I agree with DB it's your sign and how you decide to enjoy it is your choice. Having said that...I would get only the damaged areas repainted. No sanding of the porcelain. If you ever wanted to take it back it would be as easy as taking out your paint stripper and removing the touch up paint.
Once repainted it would be much easier to display because it would blend in better with other signs in better condition. The way it is one would be limited in where to display it due to the loss of porcelain. The damaged areas draw your your attention to them, difficult to look past them.

I don't know the value of that sign, but you could always sell it and ad the $$$ you would have spent on a restoration and use it for a downer on a nice original one.

Here is one like yours that Dawn did and I'm not knowledgeable on sign restoration, but it doesn't look like it's going to be a total repaint.
