16 degrees as I am typing this (quite cold for our area). Hopefully Bob's cactus are ok and the heaters are working in his frames...

We can only fit so many cacti inside this time of year. About 600 are in the frames, and the rest are in his cactus garden and scattered around our landscape.

Surprisingly the outdoor garden cacti tend to get damaged, not in this kind of weather, but in the spring if there is a warm spell, followed by a frost. If new growth has started, it is not hardened off to cold weather and the frost damages it. Rot sets in and kills the plants.

I imagine it's a lot colder in most other areas west and north of us right now.

Keep warm and safe today!

Good Morning everyone,

Hope the cacti make it through OK, Nicole.

We've jumped from 15 yesterday morning to 37 this morning. We'll get some serious melting on our lake ice today with some sun. It was fun Tuesday watching ducks coming in from other local lakes that were frozen over to visit our spot of open water. Looked like a convention of drunken sailors playing and fighting.

Here's a picture from 24 hours ago, right after I put out food for the ducks. Our resident ducks are eating along with a few wild ducks. Most of the others are sitting or standing on the ice or swimming in the open water off to the left waiting for me to go in the house. About 25 more flew in later.

Have a great hump day!

BRRRRRRRR! It's COLD!

Like Nicole says in the teens here as well. Add to that a 20MPH wind and it cuts right thru ya. Sunny and a high of 29º today. Too cold for bottle digging. Should be heading back into the 40's tomorrow. Kinda like Jim's ducks I get a late afternoon flock of Canadian Geese that fly in and land in the cut down corn field behind my house for an overnight...about 50-100 of them. Lots of little projects to get done around the house today...so off I go!

HAGD!

Good morning all.

I'm fighting a nasty sinus infection today. I've had it for a few days now, but today is the worst day so far. If this one is anything like the others I've had, that means I'm on the back side of it.

Gonna stay in the house and stay on the couch.

Later . . .

Jim

Like Phil said, cold here in the Bluegrass. Hope your child and Jim getting feeling better. I've been sick for a couple weeks now with all this weather changing back and forth. It's supposed to warm up the next week so I'll take that for January. Hope everyone has a great day!

Brian

Morning all! Warm front came in yesterday with temps up around 40! Should be more of the same today and a possible 50 tomorrow! What the heck is happening? This is unheard of weather for North Dakota! We'll take it though, it only happens a few times in a lifetime. Its headed EAST, so get ready to enjoy it!
Have a great day on me!!--KEVIN

I said most not ALL areas west. crazy Aren't you bored with all that heat and sunshine? Don't you sometimes miss the cold and snow? Just a little?

The good news after last night's cold no cactus damage (knock on wood). Bob was able to fix the wonky thermostat we were worried about in one of those cactus frames. Another cold night in the 20's and then back to 'warmer' weather.

Maybe ya should Snuggle up to a [Peruvian] Old Man in 1 of those frames! Sound like it'd be warmer than the house.

That old man cactus is the reason I try my best to admire Bob's Cacti from a distance...had one fall off a counter, saw it out of the coner of my eye and tried to catch it. There must have been thirty long broken spines in my palm.

Much prefer to snuggle with Bob on the couch. Anyway the overnight temps in the frames are kept in the 40's. As long as they are kept dry over winter, they can tolerate the lower temps, they just can't freeze. Those cooler temps actually causes about 1/3 of them to flower (check back on this post in a couple of minutes--I'll have downloaded pics taken two days ago of some flowering).

The more tropical cacti and other succulents are kept inside.
