I'm thinking of making a gravel shield for a five gallon visible. Does anyone have ideas for a source for a somewhat authentic looking material? Where do you find this stuff today.

any sheet metal shop will have expanded metal available. They should also be able to roll it to the correct diameter for you. I think the last one I had made was 35.00.

TSC-Tractor Supply co. Has some large screening that we used in racecar noses. Don't know that they carry anything that heavy, but it might be worth checking.

The one I have is on an outside pump;it's heavy duty expanded and galvinized metal. If you are going outside you might keep rust in mind.I've also seen them painted different colors.

Yeah. I was even considering that aluminum stuff. But I think maybe painted steel, with a little rust in the future might look a little better -to me.

Jim, they were actually hail guards and used in the Prairies where hail storms with hail stones the size of quarters are a regular occurrence.
Expanded metal is the proper term for that steel/product. All steel retailers carry it as it is commonly used by the manufacturing industries.
If you need, I can send you pictures of some originals. I just have to remember where I put them. I have a stack of them off of Canadian 10 gallon visibles.

Along the coast where we rarely have Hail, they are referred to a Stone/Rock guards. I'd bet more cylinders were broke by rocks thrown up by cars than Hail & Kids w/ BB Guns.

Jim T - Here is an original hail guard off a clear vision pump. These are expanded metal with quite a few coats of paint, similar to what a metal wholesaler would have. My problem is that these don't seem to fit around the glass cylinder, so I don't know if I am missing attaching hardware.
Dave's garage- could you post a picture of yours? Mine may not be the right ones as I didn't buy them with the pumps, but got them from someone else.
Thanks, Dave

All that I have seen were one piece not two as yours. Maybe it was cut?

No, they haven't been cut. The openings/void areas went over the etched numbers (gallon markers). So that you had an unobstructed view of the numbers and also so you could clearly see the gas you were purchasing. There were metal crimps made out wire (similar thickness to coat hanger wire) that held the hail guards in place by pulling them together.
I'll post some pictures during the next few days.
