I have a red indian sign from my grampa, who passed away a few years ago, have no idea what it is worth, and would like to sell. So im taking offers on it,I have a fellow interested in it but i think he's offering me to little. I was told it has a good value. It's 2 sided, porcelain, 35 3/4 inches. One side was restored. Thanks Sarah

Hello there,
Definitly interested in the sign. Your PM box wasn't working, so if you could PM me that would be great. I am out of Edmonton.

Sarah--You can see from the amount of inquiries, that you have piqued the interest of a few collectors! Your best bet is to post pictures of both sides and then take offers for about a weeks time. You should reach the full potential of the sign by doing that! Good luck! Beautiful sign!

You will probably get more at a good local auction than anywhere else. The prices people are paying locally for signs like these are going through the roof.
I posted some signs and pumps sold this week end and I do not think anyone was expecting the prices paid.
Your sign would be one of the highlights of any local petroleum auction and would bring a strong figure.

Nice sign. I collect porcelain signs. Unsure why a sign would need to be restored on one side and no visible flaws on the other side? I've seen signs faded on one side and not the other. However, never seen a sign that needed to be filled and painted (restored) on one side and appear to show mint on the other side????

I wondered that myself. Maybe it's just clear coated from some fading.

One side face down over the septic. Used as part of a floor in the shop. Used for pitching practice for the local baseball team. I am sure there could be a lot of reasons.

Really because I've seen a ton of them...

Where the side that was against a wall was protected and the side facing the elements is beat too *****.... Especially true on older signs that were in rural situations where hail, wind, rocks were beating against the exposed side.

A sign that was exposed to gravel will have a ton of pit-marks on it. As rain, freezing temps, heat works on the side exposed, any weak spots in the porcelain will become compromised.... First a chip and then some water gets behind the porcelain, the water freezes and the porcelain is slightly separated from the metal.... Causing rusting and as time goes by......

I'm hoping the owner will explain the touch up in more detail as well as the good side. Hopefully we will get to see more pictures and an explanation of what the brown stuff is on the sign. Is it filler or what?

Thunder II, I wasn't referring to Bob's post. Bob posted his post before I could post mine. What I was trying to say is that this sign will sell for $5000-$7500.00 range in my opinion. Can't bid on a bunch of what if's or speculation. First hand info from the seller is important.

Gee, I think I'd simply ask the owner of the sign for more pics and any clarification. If you've read this from the beginning, the owner obviously is inexperienced and asked for and received advice. I'm sure you could expect some reciprocity if you asked.

Maybe I'm wrong here but i would think the mint side, is the side that has been professionally restored. The other side has rements of bondo on it and i can see gouges in the sign with touch ups. You dont know exactly how bad the restored side was. That being said i think the sign is overpriced already but if your happy with a restored sign then i guess, have at her...mm

Just for calrification i have asked if the best side is the side that has been professionally restored, as the side with bondo imo has not been
professionally restored...makes a huge difference which side she is talking about...

Minuteman.....I never thought of it as you have layed it out. If what you have proposed is accurate. Then "mint" is the wrong word to be using. When I use the term mint, I use it to describe a mint untouched (virgin) sign.

there are a couple guys in saskatchewan reproducing these now, this really looks like one of them. I talked to the two brothers making them and they are using porcelain... the ones I saw were are also unmarked... I wasnt happy about that part...

its the vilas stamp on the bottom that has me thinking there is a chance this might be an original. has anyone seen one of these more than 2 years ago?

Always looking for Red Indian Tins, McColl Frontenac, McColl Bros., Buffalo (prarie cities oil co), Stellarene and other western canadian tins.

Has anyone noticed that you can see through the bondo and see the black letter and lines underneath? Possibly touch up or porcelain, but bondo wont let you see thru unless incredibly thin. Also the black edge around the sign has no bondo showing up when repair is so close. I didnt think much of it at the time, but upon a closer look at the pictures, IMO your not getting the full story.

I think the 'restorer' filled in the the two mounting holes at the top and possibly redid the black outer ring on the unrestored side. The Vilas stamp looks right.

This time they removed all the bondo from the unrestored side,,, shows more of what it did look like before restoration,,,this seems more honest to me,, it is what it is now,,
