I've seen a photo of an original mobilgas script top and it's inserts. The holes in the g's and b's in the plastic inserts had a small round indentation in them.
Were there small round metal inserts placed inside the the letters g and d or were the insides of the round spaces just painted to match the rest of the top?

Yes, there were metal inserts that attached from behind with a nut and that were painted.
