Hello All, I was looking at all of the Mobil items listed on Ebay and while I normally do not look too hard at postcards, I happened to notice the odd Mobilfuel Diesel sign shown on this card. Has anyone seen this particular version of this sign before? The thing that strikes me is the odd font FUEL is spelled with. It would seem to me they would just use the same font and design that the pump plate shields used but just make it bigger for the building signs. Judging from the surroundings I would guess this is a 6 foot sign. Again, just curious if anyone has a better photo of one of these or a recent photo of one in a collection they could post. I've not seen one sell or even be offered for sale in the 5+ years I've been watching/collecting Mobil items. Darin

Do you think it's a sign or a shield painted on the building?

I thought about it being painted but I don't see the slats either. I don't know of any other materials that they would have used for the sign, especially by the water. It would have to hold up in those harsh conditions and I don't think masonite would do it and I've never seen a plastic sign that early or that large.

I remember back on long island a friend of mine found a buch of wood Mobil signs at a marina. They were big sheets of wood and had the shields painted on them.

Well, that could help explain why none are around now. If they were wood then they were probably burned or repurposed for another project if they were still useable. I would guess if these were a porcelain shield they would probably be "out there" and available for sale every so often at least.

I remeber seeing a socony wood shield at a local garage sale. It was huge but did not look like it was for Marine use.

I think I have that same postcard around somewhere. It has the location on the back. Mass or New England someplace.

Doc, I'm guessing you remember that odd "Mobilheat" porcelain shield on a wall in New York (around NYC?) on EBay a few years ago??
Kinda reminds me of this wood sign...
