I can only post 4 at a time.
If you blow these pix up you can see some great detail.

Hey Everyone.
I was just notified by another Old Gas member that these photos have been posted before somewhere else on Old Gas.
They also asked why I posted them again.
Well I got them in an e mail with some other information from our gun club president.
Since I have never seen them before and thought I would take the time to share them with Old Gas.
Guess I didn't do my home work and surf Old Gas to see if they had been posted before.
I guess resizing the pictures and posting them was a total waste of my time, since I'm SURE everyone has already seen them before.
I guess no good deed goes un criticized.
Sorry I wasted your time!!!!!!!!!
For all of you who have nothing else to do in life other than this ***** BITE ME!!!!!!!

Thanks for the effort though, LC. Sorry to hear you were scolded. Yes, most have seen all these at one time or another. I couldn't tell you how many times I seen 'em. I'd bet they've been posted here more than a dozen times.

I believe these images come from the Library of Congress website, possibly via SHORPY. They are public domain photos and free for one to do whatever with.

My member number is 57, your's is 11,000+, so I guess I have been around a little longer than you have, but I have never seen the pictures before.

I want to thank you for posting them, my only suggestion would have been, post one at a time, maybe close ups of some of the detail of the station or the pumps.

For instance, five out of the first six pictures are GLM Fry pumps, and since they don't have bases, they would date around 1920 give or take a year. Then we could look at the cars to determine what make and year they are, then know the possible earliest date.

Determining the earliest date for the picture, also helps to determine the date these companies use a particular sign, etc. Don't just look at a picture, copy it, blow it up, look at the detail, this is where the history is.

Another for instance, look at the pic where the car is on the rack, see the air meter in the back, it has two Texaco signs on it, and to the left is a Texaco sign I have never seen before.

One other thing is trying to determine where the photos were taken, without blowing up the pics, the only one I can Identify is the last pic from Menominee, which is what I believe to be a Indian Reservation in Wisconsin, at least they have a huge casino there.

If you like looking at old pics, check out the Vintage shots from days gone by! thread on the H.A.M.B. forum. I've noticed a lot of the pics posted in the picture thread here, come from there.

WARNING- there are 2302 pages in that "Vintage shots...." thread though!

Thanks for posting these. Even if I have seen these, I enjoyed looking at them again. Some people get a negative thought in their mind and cant get it out without spreading it around to everyone they meet, and even go out of their way to "share" their thoughts. Life's too short.Dont let them ruin too much of your time.

Thanks for posting the pics.
I had never seen those before. I love the old pics. As Jack said it is the history and how we learn to date things.

Don't be bothered by those who complain Just shrug it off & continue posting...

Seems to be more than a few people here who like to chirp about others doing this, or you can't do that. Being a newer member here, I say post all the pictures you want, as many like myself have not spent days searching the site, nor do many of us appreciate looking for old pictures only to find threads with dead links to photos that have been moved on the hosting server.

I for one appreciate the efforts you went through to post these pictures and sincerely thank you for sharing them. As for the whiners out there who have nothing better to do...close your yap and politely move on if you don't have anything nice to say. If you want your site to grow with new members and new people in the hobby, then welcome them, not complain about them. I was also sent a nasty email about one of my first posts here with people who have nothing better to do complaining how I hijacked a post.

Yeah...like a little kid complaining that someone picked up there ball and through a hoop with it. Grow up and send the member a letter of thanks for taking the time to post something like the photos above, and sip some prune juice if your backed up.

Rant over...and thanks again for the history pictures LC 336. I really do appreciate your efforts and loved looking at those photos. Chee
rs!
