Very nice! Thanks for sharing.

If it was easy, anybody could do it.

Looking for nice, old soda signs, light-ups, and clocks. Mostly Pepsi and Mt. Dew.

L C , if you were to actually "Google " Shorpy.com's site , he seems to have a lot of the shots with addresses listed and sometimes , the year a peticular shot was taken . I spent some time on his site and lo an behold , I found a house I rented back in the vary early 1970's I rented in Washington D.C's North West area . It was taken in the mid 1920's . Many of the service stations featured in Shorpys photos can be seen in a vauge way in Washington D C too. I know the actual service stations are gone, still, the houses next door often remained . Thats kind of a unique thing about D C . They will go in tear out one existing structure and build on a lot . it's commonly done on K street NW just over the famous 14th street Bridge . Go South and suddenly, you're in Down Town Arlington Virginia . Ed Shaver

Jack thanks for the post, and all the additional information I appreciate it.

I was so busy looking at what was under the service rack that I didn't even see the air meter or sign.

I have been blowing the pictures up at home but they are not real clear. In the first pic just under the roof canopy it says "Toot an " I cant make out the rest.

Thanks to everyone that posted.

TOOT-AN-KUM-IN

A play on King Tut's name.

Here's a quote from the SHORPY website...

"This Amoco station at 14th and Belmont streets N.W. in Washington's Mount Pleasant neighborhood opened in July 1925. After the discovery of King Tut's tomb, the vogue for all things Egyptian extended even to gas stations."

I picked up a copy of Sculle's Gas Station in America over the winter. The book mentioned that, at one time, a service station might sell gas from a variety of refiners, but this Toot-An-Kum-In gas station is the first picture of that I've seen. It's selling Jersey Standard and Amoco gas.
