Does anyone know what oil plating is or referes to , a friend of mine sent me a Picture of an old gas Station and theres a sign out front of it that says "Oil Plating done here" would it be in referance to Oil tempering as in the tempering of Metal( Nuts and bolts)?

Well, until someone more mature answers, my guess is it was referring to rust proofing a car. Covering the panels with oil on the underside used to be a method to discourage rust.

Well I did some looking on a web site for Bearing Terminology and found this.OIL PLATING- using a mixture of oil and a solvent it is applied to all oil lubricated bearings , the solvent is then evaperated off at a moderate temperature leaving a thin coat of oil deposit on the raceways,balls and cage. oil plating greatly lowers torque values of oil lubricated bearings and can be specified for extremly low torque applications. It also mentions Grease Plating which is the same thing just used for grease packed bearings

Always wondered what the process was. Whatever it is Conoco did it.

It looks like they wanted to keep it hush hush so that is why nobody knows what it is. LOL That is a good looking sign.

Maybe it was just the way they did things before any bearing installation procedures where writen, Or it was just a clever scam by the oil companeys to get more money for repacking your wheel bearings or rebuilding your motor. ( They wouldn't do that would they)LOL

Maybe a clever way to increase oil changes in bad economic times......
Or just pushing oil.

I remember my sales rep for Marathon would always tell us we had a 'special additive' in our gas that the company cut rate units they owned didn't get.
I suppose that line has been used from the dawning of gas stations.

Your rep was right. It was added to the gas by an injection system at the loading rack when we loaded a load of Marathon Brand gas.
It the injector didn't work, there were barrels of it under the rack and we had to hand crank it into each compartment.
Wholesale accounts we loaded didn't get it.
During the 1980's I made trips to the Chemical plant and picked up loads to distribute to our different terminals.
I have some station flyers somewhere telling about it. Will see if I can find them.
I don't think they called it Oil Plating, but it supposedly did about the same thing.

Gaspddlr: I think they called it 'PBA4' or something like that. Our contention as dealers was skip the 'additive' and give us the same price as our competitors. We thought the consumers really didn't care a whole lot about the slick advertising as much as the price at the pummp I guess.
