My latest passion is for the mini oil can banks. But some I see and have appear to be in to nice a shape to really be old or maybe I should say....real. Are some of these banks being reproduced, or were some reproduced in the past? Just wondering......

There are some newer ones appearing on the market. They are actually fantasy items and not reproductions because originals did not exist. In about 1991 Sinclair released a three can set of paper label banks. NOS banks are frequently found so it is very possible to find old banks in mint condition. I have been collecting banks for about 15 years and am still finding previously undiscovered versions. I have also seen banks that were obviously home made from 4 oz top oil cans.If you have a question on a specific bank I might be able to provide an answer. The fantasy banks were done on the west coast and are primarily west coast brands.

the paper label sinclair banks(set of three have been repod-I got burned on them and talked to the guy who designed them(worked for Sinclair marketing) for reissue in the 90's. They didnt have the artwork done for the silkscreening so they had to go with paper labels

If they had art to print paper labels - they had art for silk screens. It would be the same art required for either. Probably easier/cheaper to print paper than to silkscreen the metal and then roll the cans. Later . . . Jim ------------------ www.T-waysGraphics.com

I would not call the Sinclair banks a repro. They did not exist before the early 1990s. When they were introduced they used logos that had been used by Sinclair in the past. In my opinion a reproduction is a new copy of something that existed in an earlier original form. A fantasy item is something that never existed in original form. These banks were distributed at Sinclair stations (I personally bought 6 sets at a station in OK). They are newer items and are not of the same time frame as most of the mini banks.

O.K. I'm GUILTY of making the FANTASY West Coast mini cans & bank cans. They are done with a water slide decal [I don't think ANY originals used decals]. Dick

I too do not think that the Sinclair mini banks with the paper label are necessairly repops. I recently aquired a set from an older man that had a whole case of them in a Sinclair marked box. Actually you should all the stuff he has, but I digress. I have included a couple of images of what I have. These were brand new in the case.
Always looking for Ithaca Gun and Lucky Sam soda items!!!

The paper label Sinclair banks are not technically repops. They never existed as old banks. They are more of a comemorative bank showing what some old quart cans looked like. They are from the late 80's or early 90's and aren't really sought after by bank collectors.....but as a Sinclair collector I have a set.

A couple yrs. ago, I checked into having some cans printed by a can company. **Min. order was 10,000 Plus setup fees.**
I belive the Sinclair paper label cans were made by a Novelty contractor not knowing how to set the seaming roller [BAD LID JOB]. db
