hi guys, i was at an auction a while back and this glass battery box came across the block and i bought it. i have been a member for about five years now and do not recall one of these being discussed on here.so if someone could shed some light on it that would be much appreciated. it is about 15" tall x 10" wide. the glass is in great condition. it is dated 5-43. i would think that alot of these would have been broken back in the day, but for one to survive all these years? is it somewhat rare or not? first time i have seen one. let me know what you think. thanks!

A lot of them (most) don't still have the terminals on top... Here is an explanation of the "Glass Battery" purpose in rural America, from the Ohio Glass Museum.... http://www.ohioglassmuseum.com/battery.phpI have such a case, but with only part of one terminal still intact. These batteries were talked about a few months ago in the Non-Petro BOTM....

Pretty cool looking, but how would the farmer "charge them duringt the day?"

I heard they were also used on the railroad. A lot of "Edison Battery Oil" glass bottles are found along railroad right of way.

Jim is correct. They used them on railroad lines to power the signals. I have found a few of them & some earlier ones that are round with a top made of pottery. They make a cool display.
