Buy the "BEST" you can afford! One, $1000.00 sign is better than ten, $100.00 signs.

3 major forces coming together in my opinion. 1. The American consumer demanded it. Today's consumer wants lower prices, convenient hours, and large variety of items. Same mentality that we have seen with mom and pop hardwares stores, auto parts stores, etc... Yes the consumer is partly to blame. 2. Automobile manufacturers have made it difficult for a 3 bay service station to keep up on technology, tools, and training. You need multiple bays to really do it correctly and make a nice profit. 3. The oil companies realized by getting rid of the dealer network they control the product from the ground, to the refinery, and ultimately your car. And trust me, they are making more money on that gas than what you think..it's not just cokes and smokes making them profitable.

If you find duplicates, of something good in this hobby. And keep the best one for yourself and sell the others just to pay yours and a little bit of profit to pay for your time and effort. And the other collectors don't get a shot at it. They stay mad at you and hold it against you. Just can not seem to please every one in this hobby out here in New Mexico. Just try to stay true with one circle of friends out here. Also what DB said I have had other collectors go behind my back also, When it took me years of being persistent to find it.

Here is a video I found from a couple of years ago.... Not sure if the Station has survived, I hope it has... I also hope that if it has, they are still preforming truly "Full Service" for their customers.... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bnrG4CqsMLI&feature=related

I do like Dick's answer though. I don't understand Dick's answer. Please help. And yes i feel a little better Send me the Phone # & Address of where you spotted that ERIE 53 & ROMAN last week! You told me what you offered, so IF I offer $100 more, I have a couple of friends that can help snag it out from under ya. IT HAS happened to me & I have NEVER done it to anyone Knowingly. It's always a Hard call when I get a call out of the blue & then a couple days later a fellow collector tells me about the same item. IF you have been honest in the past, your fellow collector friend will believe you [he will be jealous], but friends are worth more than Stuff.

OP... I agree, the modern stations suck... Ugggggly pumps... but on the upside, sometimes the cashier is a pretty girl.
Dick... I feel the similar, except that at times I'd rather have a friend/fellow collector/picker be able to get to the station if I can't get there myself. I'd be more bummed if a total stranger grabbed the opportunity and I never get a second chance at items. At least if a friend gets the stuff I can oogle it and maybe pick an item from them.

I think DB has posted a couple of things that he learned the hard way;as did I.Yes,do keep your mouth shut about items you have located UNLESS you have a friend you trust so much that you share leads with so that it goes both ways without fear. And yes, there are a few people that I do that with to the point that I have authority to buy for him and he has authority to buy for me within understood limits. That takes a lot of trust.
For me,the most accurate comment DB made is "friends are worth more than stuff".Well said.Again speaking only for myself, the hobby is a lot more fun when guys look at it that way.

Yes, I agree friends are worth more than this junk.....
Not everybody out here is a bad apple
Like Wendell said you can only tell a few people out here who you trust. Their are more good guys out here than bad one's
I also learned the hard way, and still learning the ropes of this crazy hobbie !!!
