Is there a way to tell if a Shell clamshell globe is real or fake? Don't have any photos I can share right now. A guy has one for sale and he said he believes it is an original. He bought it many years ago and was told it was original. I'm supposed to go see it today and want to make sure it's not a repop.
Thanks Mac

Supposed to go look at the globe at noon today. Anyone have any info they can share? I did a search in the archives, but didn't find any definitive answers.
Thanks Mac

Even a repo is over 200 plus shipping so use that as a guide. If it sounds like he has had it 20 years, it should be real..

The guy wants $450 firm for it. If he'd sell it to me in the $200 to $300 range I'd be willing to take my chances and buy it.
Thanks Mac

I am pretty sure they are dated or marked repro on the base. Repro's are very white in color were the originals are an off white in color. If some of the paint has come off look to see if it is etched... if so it's an original. If you have a repro and original next to each other there would be a big differance.
Good question!
Looking for anything from Hoosier Pete, Platolene 500 and Red Bird.

Okay, here's the globe. I couldn't find any markings on the globe, no dates, no made in the USA, or anything. The guy said he has had the globe for 10 years and traded a pedal car for it. He said he doesn't know if it's an original or not. Any other ways to tell if it's original or not? Thanks Mac

If it is original, it is worth about 1700 to 1800 bucks. Super shells are way more rare than ones that just say "shell". I can't be sure, but I think that one may be a repo, but don't hold me to that. The repos were done around 1998, so that means they are now 8 or so years old. Remember, I am ONLY voiceing an opinion and what I say is not law.

One other thing to consider, if the guy only wants "450 firm" for a globe worth 4 times that, well, chances are he has done his homework.

Roger,
Totally agree with you on what he is asking. However, I asked him why he was asking $450 and he said because that is what his pedal car was worth when he made the trade.
I was hoping that someone knew for sure if the repops were marked in some way. I looked at Scott Benjamin's site and tried calling him, but couldn't reach him. I am assuming that if Shell licensed the production of repops, they would have to be marked in some way, for example: reproduction, manufacture date, or licensed by Shell, etc?
Thanks Mac

Don't think the seller knows much about globes from our conversation. From looking at the Super Shell globe on Benjamin's site, it appears that the globes he sells come with decals? A friend of mine said that someone he knows bought one from him and it had water-release decals that came with it. The globe I am looking at definitely has had the red lettering fired on and is smooth to the touch.
The globe didn't have any markings on it and the bottom of the globe base was rough in texture.

Oh, last thing....someone mentioned that they have been repopping this since 98', but when I met with the guy he said he has had the globe for at least 10 years plus.

I just looked in the globe book and it says "super shell: dated 1994 or marked repro and very white in color"
I don't know... it's so hard to tell without having it in your hands. The paint should be fired on! Paint looks a little lite... could be darker. I think i would guess it to be a repro also.
Real cheap if it's real!
