Ethyl pump plate question?
Here is on on ebay 200844928849
This looks like a fake to me... what are the differances between a real and a fake? Size? Are they all EGC or ECC plates?
Need a little education on the Ethyl plates.

Originals Usually they say " reg us patten off" and the fakes usally don't have the correct location on The mounting holes. The 3" ones have no mounts and glue on.

Never knew they dated some like that. Price made me think people were fishy of it.

I believe some were dated but best to get another opinion too. Does anyone else want to chime in?

I hope this is not considered a hi-jack on your thread Jarvis, I'm just adding my thoughts on the 8" plates with the smaller holes in the opposite pattern of the 100% known originals. I will also add I do believe 100% that the sign selling on Ebay 200844928849 is a repro.
When I bought the sign below, I posted it on here in Oct. of 2011 questioning what others thought of authenticity. The replies were split on it being real or repro. The lady I bought it from said she guaranteed it was old and it came off an old pump. (We all know not to take the "story" as gospel, which I never do when buying anything!) I did then and still do believe this is an original sign. All of the repros I've seen on Ebay or offered by the resto dealers say Ethyl Gasoline Corporation New York USA and do not have the REG. U.S. PAT. OFF. wording at the bottom. Mine says Ethyl Corporation and has the wording at the bottom. The shelving is unbelievable on the sign as well. The back of the plate is white but has the black gunk ledge on the bottom that I see on original signs that had been used for years. I saw one exactly like mine offered by a reputable sign dealer at Peotone a year or two ago.
I wish I knew the answer on this one. I've seen ones like it sell on Ebay for around $100, but I think it's been drilled in our heads for so long that they have to have the grommets in the one particular pattern that people are afraid to bid on them. It would also seem to me if they are repros, shouldn't there be tons of them like this on the net? I only paid $65 for it, so it's not that I'm wishing it was real because I spent $200 on it and I got screwed, lol....I really think some of the upside down small hole pattern ones are legit. If a repro dealer is offering the exact sign below I would love to know so I could see for myself!

I concur that the sign selling on eBay 200844928849 is a readily available reproduction.

Nekbe is one of those sellers that slips in reproductions amongst his original signs.

Years ago I bought a pair of repo ethyl signs....the older 8" version. Shortly after I found a pump behind a shed on a farm with two on it. I was really surprised when I compared them. The repos were twice as thick and heavy metal and porcelain ,with heavy shelving. The originals were quite thin, nearly like the lead warning signs....and had little shelving.

As a kind of test I asked a couple collectors to pick out the real one at a swap meet I attended....they picked the repo. each time. I have a picture somewhere of the two side by side...but cannot find it right now.

Heavy shelving does not seal the real deal on a sign for me after that discovery.

Jim

I am so glad all I collected was Texaco/Havoline. 16 years and 100's of signs, cans and a few globes later, never "one" reproduction in my collection. When I was asked to sell the remainder of my best friends collection. Erol Tuzcu who's collection was featured in the book "A Tour With Texaco" by Rick Pease, I noticed a fake/fantasy clock in the boxes. "I THREW IT OUT" !!! Along with another clock, I "sold as one" after finding out it wasn't real. I'm so Thankful to Erol and Puretex (Keith J.) from Oklahoma who helped me get started collecting, answering my questions. I feel for you guys having to question your items.

Doug

I was watching it JJ... I just couldn't "pull the trigger"..

I think I am like you and other "Experienced Collectors" who would rather "walk away" or "sit on the sideline" and watch an item if something in their gut, doesn't seem right...

I'm not sure why I didn't make an offer on it....

I'm comfortable saying, that IMO, you have the "real deal" and with what the prices have been lately... I am jealous of the price you paid for it... LOL

Lately... the prices have been "all over the board" as you know... So for $150, I would be very happy to display it in my garage... LOL

I'm not sure if the seller of the one with the lake in the background is who I think it is,but if it is,I'd be a little leery.

Here is the backside of mine that I have posted above. It is not a real heavy metal sign nor does it have thick shelving although you can feel the shelving. Split grommetts.

It is obvious and apparent from all the posts that this is another sign that has been spoiled by all the reproductions. Your chances of purchasing a reproduction are greater then purchasing an original. Another example of how unmarked reproductions hurt legitimate signs.

Known procelain reproduction for $35.00.

005.jpg
Unsure of this one...heavy shelving. Missing "trade mark info" & "with".

...looks to me like the mounting holes on the signs in question are a little too close to the edge to be practical...the 'known-to-be-old' signs have grommets, and the holes are in different locations...

...used both sides to register the colors during printing? I dunno...you see the two-sided 'Contains Lead' signs that have one side overprinted with black or blue...

I have no idea what that would have been used for. I believe that sign was made DSP on purpose; due to the completely finished graphics on both sides.

I have a few of the double printed Contains lead signs, the second side is always flawed and never fully completed.

Here's mine, looks the same as Dave's he is unsure of. Mine is thinner & not heavily shelved. More like a contains lead plate. Appears to be real.

I don't think they have repoped the 7" plates with two holes yet. My G&B 80 came out of the scrap yard with one still on it. I'm pretty sure it's 7", I'm not at my shop right now. I sure am wondering if my larger one with three holes is real now. Brady

John i like that one you posted. Looks ok IMO. Like the rack marks on the back.
These have to be different hole locations than the EGC. The EC ones seem to always have the holes at 2, 6 and 10.
Wish an older 40's photo would surface with a good shot of one.
