The reason I chose mine was not for a "catchy handle" but because a Bowser pump was the first pump i owned. It is what started me in this hobby.

MAXGAS Last name = Maxim My family owned several Gas Stations around the capital area in Maine. My dad worked their as a young man and always reminisces about my "Uncle Benny" and the old Harley Davidson service car they used. I fell in love with the smell of gas as a little kid and use to say I wanted to pump gas when I "grew up". That never happened but fortunately my love for original items only continues to grow with my collection.

My favorite body style car in the 80's was GM's G-body platform. After having my first decent paying job in 1989 (which is where I'm still employeed) I had the opportunity to purchase a used 1984 Monte Carlo, but it was missing the looks of the SS model introduced by GM in 1983. After reading many Hot Rod & Car Craft articles and viewing some awesome transformations. I was moved to start a restoration on my own 1984 Monte Carlo "SS clone". The transformation did turn out very well, and others must have thought the same because the car was stolen during the night on Labor Day weekend in 1993 while visiting the in-laws in Rockford, IL.
I'm happy to say that I have now been the 2nd owner of an ORIGINAL 1988 CHEVROLET Monte Carlo SS with 5,7xx miles for the past 19 years and therefore is my answer to How/Why I choose my username as I believe it fits!

Everyone thinks I from Florida, but born and raised in eastern Oregon and Washington. The name gator was given to my wife and I because once we start something we don't turn loose of it. 75 pumps and 200 globes later I guess the name fits. Richard

My parents gave me mine. But, can I take this thread one step further? Why did you all choose the picture for your avatar?
Mine is of the last ship I was on before retiring from the Navy reserve. It's a fleet oiler, USNS Guadalupe. We floated in the Pacific with about 7 million gallons of fuel.

I was working with old trucks and tractors with just a little gas and oil stuff around the shop until I got a couple of pumps to round out the display so to speak.I did then and still do have several pieces of OLD woodworking and shop machinery around the place.
Guys coming in to look at the trucks and tractors kept saying things like,"you have all kinds of old iron around here".The name seemed appropriate so I had some Old Iron Farm and Gas signs made for the shop. When I joined Oldgas I just stayed with it because a lot of guys around here recognize the handle.
Wendell. There, this time I remembered to use my name.LOL.

I chose mine because it is of me and my father(deceased)with an old Fry pump that we hauled off a farm in south Alabama. He was a sport(along with my mother). Both got sick around the same time(cancer), but died 17 months apart. It was a hell of a time...

My mother put the name on a pair of overalls I would wear when I first starting working on cars in high school. The avitar was choosen by my daughter. That's her dog and a street rod I built from an F100 that I've owned since 1981.

I got my simple yet effective name from Pat Metheny's 1978 Jazz album of the same name (which I played to death & still fire up on CD). Of course I didn't really get into the petro stuff until 1984.
I've been using "THE AMERICAN GARAGE" for almost 35 years!

When I first got into collecting gas stuff I use to drive all over the place. No place was to far away and it was not uncommon for a day ride to end up 300+ miles away from home. So when I joined I became fueluser and am that name on many sites and ebay. John ... oh and the picture is my everyday car with way to many miles on it for an 07.

My dad started raising rabbits commercially and started selling cages to people who bought his rabbits in 1961. Today, 51 years later, the company is run by his grandson, my son, and continues to support my passions like fishing, racing, flying, restoring cars, and oh yeah.....collecting petroliana. By the way, I didn't know collecting old gas station junk was called "petroliana" until about ten years ago when I got this sickness......Anyway, I've been a Rabbitman all my life. I've got to get an avatar pic posted someday, I guess......Gary

I was never creative enough to come up with something off the wall and besides, my name has not got me into any trouble elsewhere so I figured I would keep using it here. This is a fun thread, I have always wondered about some of these names. In my mind the most clever award goes to Mick, aka oldnfuelish. My avatar is a Sinclair racing oil cloth banner that so far is the only one known. Tom.

It was either "Pegasus" or "Gargoyle".....as I sit here at the computer there's probably 300+ of them staring down on me from the walls and shelves......so I flipped a coin and the red horse won.

Bought the 67 in 68 drove it to work the first day at the refinery in 73 and until the last day in 2003. The kids at the refinery would ask when I was going to sell that old pickup to them. My story was, it and I are going go retire at the same time. Which we did and I bought a new truck and started the restoration, modification on the 67. I'll post pictures if I ever get it done before I die. Mitch

Have you seen my part of the country? Pretty self explanatory. Stockshowing is big in Texas, and our family has done it for years. The avatar is my youngest selling a top placing steer at Houston. It was just a handy pic to practice on, and once I got it to the correct size, I have just never changed!

Went Wadhams collecting crazy about 20 years ago. When I was trying to come up with an Ebay user I.D. a friend suggested Mr.Wadhams. Kinda became my identity. A drawback is some people think that is my real name and then I have to explain what it means. It can be a long explanation as a lot of people never heard of Wadhams.

My real name is Tim Rowland but people use to literally make fun of me for dragging home old rusty gas pumps. They thought it was funny to laugh and make jokes about how stupid it was and why I would want all these ugly old pumps, so they called me "Goober." The nickname stuck about 25 years ago. As time went by and they started watching TV, they don't laugh so hard anymore?...

Mine is another of the un-original ones, my first and middle initials and full last name, which is also my Ebay ID as well. Just figured it would be easier using it everywhere.

Just my name. For some reason lots of people call me Dick also though... I got the Happy Bear not too long ago and I thought he looked friendly and looks like hes reaching his hand out to shake so I put him up there.

I was born the day Bullitt was released in theatres, Oct 17 1968. Oh ya and I have a 68 GT FB replica. Dave My brother was shipping out to Vietnam and my mom and I went to San Fran to see him off and the movie Bullitt was showing. We went and then drove the streets where they shot the chase scene. How much fun can you have in a rental car?? Happy to say my brother came home in one piece...

It's what I collect, going on (21) years with Holiday now. The Erickson family started Erickson stations in the 20's, then we split into current day Holiday, and Freedom Valu Centers. All still privately owned by the family. They also own about half of the Gander Mountain chain.
I'm a former collector, turned Erickson/SA/Northwestern Refining Company/Holiday petroliana picker, for a member of the family.

Oldgas = old gas stations Since I was the first member, I took the user name of Oldgas. Funny thing is when the database was converted from a flat file to MySQL in the big upgrade in 2009, I somehow lost the member number of #1 and became #2031.

The old car hobby is what got me into Petroliana so mine was a carry over from another Forum where I am a member dealing with old trucks and originated due to my 1937 GMC truck that I own. It was a toss up between that and another user name I have of Bowtie34 which was for my 1934 Chevrolet; if I had to do it all over again I think I would liked to come up with some “snappy” gas and oil related name, but just too much work as this point to change. The Avatar is a picture of an old rusty grill shell off of a 37 GMC truck.
Buying: Polarine / Red Crown Gasoline Globes and Signs, Early Chevrolet & United Motors Signs, and 1910's through 1940's Gas & Oil Signs.

I owned a 1932 Ford 3 window coupe show car. It had a blown small block with four Weber carbs. So I was Ducecpe. Sold it, bought a 1937 Ford coupe with 18,000 acutal miles. Could not bring myself to turn it into a street rod so sold it too. Then bought a small collection of Conoco signs and have not stoped . So no more street rods.. Just lots of Gas n Oil stuff.. I go by Ducecpe on Ebay also. My real name is Ric Esgar

Nickname of the owner of the Standard Station in my Dad's hometown that I am re-creating. My grandfather moved the Station building to his farm after it closed in 1972 and my brother, cousins and I used it as a clubhouse. That's me in the "Fonz" shirt.

I am old school, my member number is 57 (I almost got on this site before Jim Potts did), just trying to be smart.
Just like DB we signed up using our real names, thus, unless Jim jumps in to correct me, I am the longest member of Old Gas still using his real name.

Just to let anyone know, I agree, DB has been here longer that I have, possibly an hour.
But, I believe I am the oldest guy making regular posts here on Old Gas.
My first Iowa Gas was in 1988, my first CTO was in 1989, the second year for both of these shows, God have I looked at alot of Petroliana.

My avitar is a simple graphic I did for my neice. Not many of my paintings would work that small for an avatar except maybe the one below, but I thought it would be confusing considering my name. But DB it could be a self portrait! LOL
After all John Wayne's real name was Marion Mitchell Morrison.

Hi, Firebird because that's my first American Car I own. It's a 1980 Pontiac Firebird Esprit ( under resto right now ), I also have a 1991 Firebird and a 1956 Packard Clipper Deluxe in my garage. Here in Europe the real American Cars are in minority. My ID card shows Belgium, march 1968... . Xavier

Great thread, good idea DB.
"Oltoydoc" the name has been with me a long time. I liked old toys, but couldn't afford anything really nice, so I'd buy the beaters, fix them up and display them. Then like most collectors, one day I started selling a few to support my addiction, and buy nicer stuff. I'm not into toys much anymore, unless they relate to petro.

Quite a few times i thought about changing my screen name to my real name of charles schilling. I get questions and offers via PM based solely on my screen name, so ive kept it. Afterall 90% of my personal collection is thermometers. Hope to meet more oldgassers at the shows in 2013!

Well since Chevron made the house payments for over 30 years I figured what the hay! They treated me well, promoted me and allowed me to retire at 51, so yes, I only buy Chevron or Texaco gas. Besides I only collect Chevron / Calso and Standard Oil of Calif stuff, outside of that one darn "one piece" Gulf globe.....
PS - "full-o-gas" ...KEEP IT! great name! If someone is offended they need to lighten up a bit!

I've really enjoyed this thread... There are so many user names that when I read it; I've wondered... What does it mean and/or how did they come up that that one?...
Being as boring as I am, I spent a couple days debating what name to use when I first joined.... And still couldn't come up with anything original....
I hope any who haven't posted, will do so....

We live on a hill in the foothills of Mt. Spokane. Didnt have much land that was level. Over the years one leg has gotten shorter than the other from worken around this place with the hills and such. We have paid a price for liven on the hill like the cars and truck rollen into trees. Lathes sliding off trucks. Milling machines sliding off forklifts, frames bent from trying to drive with a load on a hill, cars rolling into the shop from the house up above, tractors rolling over the bank, the endless soccor balls rollen down the hill. I may not seem like I have too much smarts but I used to like to read Louis L'amour books and enjoyed reading about the Sacketts and thier hillside farms. Can you imagine my life liven on a hill and not haven nothen with a emergincy brake that works. We have broke a transmition or two. It is pretty easy riden a bicycle down to the bottom thou. Iv been thinken on hooken some winches to some trees on the way up so we dont have to burn up the tires on the car tryen to get up to the house when the road gets iced up so we dont have to walk. The UPS guy cant stand us cause of our road cummin up here. Any way if go up Lincoln road and turn left I believe it's at the guys place on the corner. If you cnat find it let me know and weel have Nick run down there and show you.

As a child in upstate New York, I was on one of the lakes in the Finger Lakes region, when a summer storm kicked up. My aluminum canoe, soon became the recipient of a gift from Thor himself. Literaly blasted out of the water by a bolt of lightning, I was soon rescued by some people of one of the local Indian Tribes. An ambulance was waiting for me on shore, as they brought me back to the beach, in one of their boats. After a short stay in the hospital, my family and I went to thank them. They honored my family, and made me an Honorary Member of the Seneca Tribe, of the Great Iroqouis nation, and bestowed upon me, the name Distant Thunder... This name, as I grew older, took on even more significance as I started riding and showing horses. During special events, I/we were introduced with a reading from the book of Job, 39.19 "Hast thou given the horse strength? Hast thou clothed his neck with Thunder?" (Read 39.19-25 for the full intro) My Arab Charger would explode into the show arena, her hooves, producing the sound of Distant Thunder... That name even carried on into my professional life as an aircraft mechanic on the Northrop Advanced Tactical Bomber Program, know to many as the "Stealth Bomber". Thunder has even been used as a radio call sign. Thats me and Jeana Yeager... We made great looking couple! (Thats a picture of a picture. Hence the recent date. That was shot in 1988 if I remember correctly) Upon moving to Colorado, and setting up my little spread out here, both the farm and my road, aquired the name, Thunder. Distant Thunder Farms, on Thunder Road. Even in the Company name, the RT stands for "Rolling Thunder"...
Anything Chevron I'd rather be flying.....

Nickname. My name is Cogan and friends all call me Cog or usually theCog. The "o" (oh) is the long sound - definately NOT like the Clint Eastwood movie "Coogan's Bluff." Not like that at all.

Amongst collecting petroliana, old radios, neon signs, and various cars, my son loves emergency vehicles which we have two. We have a fully restored 1965 Plymouth Fury I Colorado State Patrol car and an original unrestored 1965 Dodge Polara California State Patrol car....thus 1965CHPCSP. Also, my avatar, the Armour Frank Boy, reminds me of my son when he was younger.
Collecting Conoco, Gates Rubber & Tires, B.F. Goodrich, Cliff Brice, Vickers, Mobil, National Refining Co., Philco, Ma Bell and Pikes Peak Hill Climb!

I'm a LORD of the Rings junkie and collect oil cans mainly. I always thought the early advertising on cans that reflected PARAFFIN was interesting and different. LORD + PARAFFIN.....well you get the point!

Well my love of petro is deep rooted in the hunt for it. My favorite part is the 30 feet from my truck to the front door of a house that i hope to pick. I love it i love when a guy comes out and useually nothing is for sale and then i slowly move him to the position of a seller. I love getting in the barns and the school buses. That are full of anything it doesnt matter what. I just want to be in there. Getting filthy and sweating to death. I always want to find something. But most of the time i dont. For me its about putting my hands on the "rust & dust".
Hunt long and hard the good stuff still out there. Jonathan lowry.

This thread is probably one of the best I have ever seen or participated in on Old Gas. There has been no conflict of interest, just plain and simple shop talk as the site was designed to provide to its members. I think a big thank you is deserving of DB for starting it. And lets not forget Jim Potts as this great petro site would not be possible without him. With today being Christmas and a time for giving...when is there a better time to say THANK YOU JIM for a great site, THANK YOU DB for the post, and THANK YOU to ALL the OLD GASSERS who contributed.
MERRY CHRISTMAS to ALL!

Just my name. Actually, when I joined the first time years ago I used my first and last name, and then life got in the way and was off line for a few years, and when I came back I didn't have any of my old information from when I was on here before. I thought of trying to get ahold of Jim and seeing if I could retrieve my old info, but instead I just re-registered using my first two initials and last name. I like to keep things simple. Ken.

db thanks for starting this thread!.... I am learning a lot more about everyone....
For those Members, who don't have your "given" name in your profile, I ask again that you add it... Non Members are not able to access your profile. So that should not be a reason, to not add your "real" name to your profile...
And atleast for me, I like to use someone's name when I am sending or receiving a PM and/or email... Bob's right on here, It would be nice to at least have people's first name. Thanks for starting this Dick

I like hotrods and Harleys. But for some reason or another I've also always had a thing for German cars, more specifically BMW's and Porsche. When the day comes that I finally get that special German Auto my license plates will say DASFST1. It's kind of my way of keeping a goal right in front of me.

Just completed....Last name too Good to see members posting names. My first oldgas.com name was blackteetexacogold, from the hillbilly song (Granny & Jed etc...) It took too long to type so I asked Jim if I could change it. Went with blackT. I've always loved the star logo with the black surrounding the green T. The colors red, green, black & white together do it for me. ; )My father owned a Texaco Station and I worked their with my five older brothers all the time. The station was sold in 1976 do to my father's passing. The station still sits in a neighborhood in Ann Arbor Mi. Branded Citgo now. Member Dave ? Tank driver from Homer, MI. tells me he used to deliver gas to the station a long time ago. Started collecting around 1998 and stopped around 2010. I miss it sometimes. Thanks to Jim Potts and Dick Doug

Back in 1970 my partner Vic Cecelia and I opened a "Speed Shop", building and racing drag cars and selling parts. We always liked Pontiac's so that was our race car of choice. We did well enough that John DeLorean the head of Pontiac and father of the GTO took notice and gave us a 1973 TA Firbird, engines, parts, etc. to race in SS/JA. The "Bad Birdie" went 11:02 with a turbo trans and Qjet carb. That led to us racing for Pabst Blue Ribbon beer in the "Pabst Charger" AA/FC with with one of the best wrenches in drag racing at the time, Charlie Proite. Yes we did race with "5 quart" Don Raleigh in NJ back in the day. That's where "OLD RACER" came from.

I worked in the engine built shop for TRD (Toyota Racing Development) in Costa Mesa, CA. We built the engines for the "OPEN WHEEL" CART cars, then for the IRL and most recently of course NASCAR. My first name was "RACER" but then I saw "OLD RACER" and didn't want to blemish his name so I changed it to "OPEN WHEEL" because that's the racing I like the most.

The first sign I bought was the "For use as a motor fuel only CONTAINS LEAD (tetraethyl). I saw it a garage sale along with the early oval Texaco Handy oiler. Just thought it was a unique name for my online stuff. It was the beginning of my addiction.
I am really glad I found this site and would like to thank all of you who make this website a phenominal resource as well as a good time seeing what everyone else has.

My user name is Big B because my last name starts with a B and my friends used to call me B ( it was easier than my last name). And since my son is now little b I had to be Big B. Me and my son go out and hunt old petro items and other vintage goodies. He says I'm an GASOHOLIC and I'll stand up at any meeting proudly and state its true!!

I don't know how I got to this thread but reading it was a real pleasure. First it was started by DB and second there were many surprising answers. Since I missed it I thought I would resuscitate it as many new members have joined and might add their explanations. Like many when prompted, I could not think of a handle right of the top of my head. The gasman label that I wanted was already chosen in multiple forms so I used a mangled zip code of a city I visit often. My avatar is our family's best friend who looked so guilty (who, me?) in the picture that it's a keeper.

I've been working on cars since I was a kid. My dad worked nights with my granddad at the phone company and they would bring me along to gas up the trucks, check the oil and wash them. My first car was a 66 mustang and I was always working on it to make it look and run better. Eventually my mother, tired of washing all my greasy cloths, gave me a set of coveralls embroidered with Hardy's Garage above a standard oil patch. I guess it stuck and, believe it or not, 50 years latter I still have the coveralls. Unfortunately they have shrunk as I surly can't have gotten that much bigger.
The avatar is a photo of my 54 F100 street rod that I built and have owned in one form or another since 1974 and our families best friend.

It was bittersweet to look at some of these...
Old Iron and I had a number of pms that I have saved. He also sent me e-mail pictures of his 'yard art' that was so cool, it was used on at least one occasion as a film set. He also was really generous with showing his collections and sharing his wisdom about collecting to anyone who visited. He called his collection his museum, and Bob and I were trying to figure out if we could swing by and see him on our next trip to a cactus convention, when he passed away.
He did not have an avatar, but either Jim or one of the moderators put his picture in there after he passed away, and I am really glad to see it. He was such a gentleman with a big heart and that picture shows it.
And for those of you wondering why DB's avatar is not the pump he describes, he changed his avatar on a regular basis. During my tenure, it was two different kind of pumps (one being a Sunset Tok 34 twin) and a weird shark/cat thing. One of the pumps was yellow with white lathe behind it, and looked like an old jaundiced guy with glasses--that I asked DB if that was a self portrait. The one you see now is his beloved dog Ben Hur, who lived to be 15--smoking must be really good for dogs then cause that was old for a dog! I think that Avatar showed up after the last Iowa gas where Mick posted pic's of DB playing with Micks pug Bella. The black sash was added after DB passed away.
And Cold Pizza did have a cold pizza avatar! And it looked both mouth-watering and icky at the same time...

So glad this thread was brought back up. I missed it, but won't this time.
I've been working on a 32 ford roadster for about 8 years now, collecting period correct parts has been a very slow process to build a 40's style traditional hot rod, it's taken a lot patience but is worth it.
My wife came into the shop when I was placing another piece on the car that I found and she said " when you get that thing done you'll be DoneFor". It stuck.
Have gas all the time

Long time lurker, first time poster - I’ve been in the gasoline business most of my life; I enjoy collecting petroleum (Petro) and non-petroleum (Plus) collectibles.

This has been a fun thread to read. Some of the user names have a lot of thought and creativity in them. Mine, not so much! I've been collecting gas pump Salt and Pepper shakers about 15 years now and chose SandPCollector as my user name.

I collect gas pump salt and pepper shakers and the plastic coin banks made by AVSCO.
