New member here.Hello to all .Restoring a 300 Tokiem to a fire chief.Have all the sheetmetal off and starting on the guts.Have a question. The hose is not rotting and solid when I removed it tonight. However the rubber (black) is giving off a black soot as you handle it.Is there anyway to seal the rubber.First time restoring a pump but have restored a lot of other stuff, cars, antiques et'c.Really looking forward to this project.Lot's of good info here.I have been collecting oil/gas for years. My garage has room for no more(my wife tell's me) but I always seem to find room. grin

Offer to move HER into Garage, so she will have Plenty of room for HER stuff!
Better to replace the hose from local bulk sales or someone that sells hoses [farm supply].

Using an old hose is like putting bald tires on your restored car.

Thanks, New hose it will be.Want it to look nice and the old dull hose would only weather and rot away sooner than later. Thanks for the input.I am sure I will need more as I move along.

Replace! New black hoses are cheap and you don't want that dirty old black rubber thing in the house! Its only for display anyway, so replace it!

Yea outside underneath a three foot overhang on the garage & house. The hose and covering is solid without rips/tears /wringles.Perfect outer skin except for the black soot.

Sounds like weathered oxidized rubber. I have always reused rubber from a pump. I am not talking about cracked or brittle rubber (and yes even semi hardened rubber with traces of paint = once the rubber has softened helps the paint come off with using your fingernails). I soak it, if it is a small piece in armorall for a couple of days. I put the piece in a jar but some armorall in and put the lid on. Every so ofter I go over and shake the jar. If it is a larger piece I put a liberal coat on it leaving it wet for a while with continued application and continued rubbing will remove the oxidized stuff and leave a usable plyable item. John
